Crescent knife, broken or not? [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-17-06, 12:35 PM I couldn't find any errata on it, and it hasn't appeared in any new 3.5 books, so is the crescent knife a broken weapon? It is an exotic dagger that does 1d3 and allows for two attack roles with one swing due to the double blades. As this should allow a rogue to do sneak twice with two successful rolls it seems a bit too good. I remember it being first printed in a Dragon Mag way back when 3.0 was just released, and since then it has shown up in the Forgotten Realms Campaign sourcebook which I thought was 3.0.

05-17-06, 12:52 PM I think the "two attack" mechanic for this item is a wrong idea. When a dragon claws you, you don't roll for each nail. You shouldn't get more attacks with an item like this; it would only lead to abuse.

A better mechanic would be something like a bonus to confirm criticals or whatever. Or better yet, just call the darned thing a dagger and the shape/design of it is just flavor.

So this wasn't a one time fluke, someone apparently thought the item balanced to inluclude it in print twice. A feat for a reduced die of damage on a dagger but two attack roles? It sounds too good to be true, but who am I to argue with Sean Renoylds, Ed Greenwood, and Skip Williams?
