| inkeyeshasthecoolestart05-13-07, 07:52 AM | Is there any limit to how big your critical multiplier can be? I think I remember somone telling me that the max is x5 but i cant find any official ruling on it. |
| RoninFrosty05-13-07, 08:00 AM | The highest I can recall seeing OTTOMH is x4, and that's on a 20. x5 is (possibly) feasible, but any higher and you start getting kinda ridiculous. x7 critical multiplier on 2d6 is 14d6. That's waaaaaaaaaaay too high. As for an official ruling, though, I can't say. |

As far as I know, there's no official limit on how high you can go. Just remember the way crits are added (X+Y-1) and repeat for each new bonus that applies. The highest I can remember seeing is x5, but in theory it could go higher. |
| inkeyeshasthecoolestart05-13-07, 10:10 AM | Its just that my group the "main dm" made his own class where he has hunter's mercy unlimited as an ability and a crit multiplier of like x8 at level 20.(Projectile improve critical 5 times on a longbow)He has ruled it fair cause he is the "main dm" even though it is insanely overpowered. If there is no official ruling on crit multiplier then i guess should take this over to the player or class boards. |

As long as the DM allows it, of course. I'm not sure what you mean by "main DM" though. Is it just that he's DM in most of your games, or is this some sort of musical chairs game where the DM title changes hands every so often? In the former case, you can just overrule the homebrewed class when you're the DM. In the latter, well, I suppose it depends on how you adjucate DM rulings in a musical chairs game. If it's a majority vote thing and everyone has voted to allow the class, then there's really not much you can say. |
| inkeyeshasthecoolestart05-13-07, 01:01 PM | Its kind of the musical chairs thing. We change DM's every so often but the DM just makes the storyline. He is considered the main DM for all rulings and such. I am the newest at the game(by like a month though) and i dont know why he makes rulings, he just does. Some of the other players are felling it, but they arent doing anything about it. I guess I have to hit the player boards. |
| RoninFrosty05-13-07, 01:30 PM | As it happens, many DMs have the tendency to "baby" their creations, even if they're broken as ****. Seems to be the case with this class. |
| Dire_Rhino05-13-07, 02:10 PM | (Projectile improve critical 5 times on a longbow) I'll go out on a limb and say that this does not stack. Feats rarely stack, and then only if they suck (who in their right mind takes Toughness twice?!). |
| Damionte05-13-07, 03:54 PM | If he made his own class with his own house rules then there is no limit. Just note that he'll break the game. |
| Nephlite05-13-07, 04:26 PM | I'll go out on a limb and say that this does not stack. Feats rarely stack, and then only if they suck (who in their right mind takes Toughness twice?!). The Tarrasque did. |
| Dire_Rhino05-13-07, 04:33 PM | I'd hazard a statement that the Tarrasque is the opposite of intelligent CharOp. Seriously. CR, what 18? And it can't fly? |
| Ryu Katsuragi05-13-07, 05:38 PM | I'm not sure what the 'maximum' would be, but I think the best you can get is x7, and that's with a x4 weapon against dragons (I havn't got my books, but it was something like you get a x3 improvement on your critical multiplier against dragons). |
| tui05-15-07, 11:47 AM | The highest crit multiplier I remember seeing is x5 for a cavalier with Spirited Charge and a lance. I'm naturally skeptical of home-brew classes... and I find them rather difficult to balance, especially at higher levels. If you're concerned about the class and want a second opinion, you might suggest having the "main DM" post his class here on the Classes boards and see what people have to say about it. It's sometimes difficult for players to aggressively contest something with their DM, and having an impartial critique can be helpful. On the flip side, it sounds like this class may be a bit of a one-trick-pony, so to speak, and might be particularly vulnerable against enemies immune to crits. While I haven't really played much above ~14th level or so, I gather crit-immunities start becoming more common. Course it can be lame when the DM has to specifically develop enemies just to deal with one broken character, when that will also hurt other characters (like the party Rogue). |
| penchant05-15-07, 12:09 PM | When playing with these types of DM's the only way to deal with it is to politely ask, "are there any custom PrCs or Classes you have made for your world?" When the answer is yes, pick the brokenest one and break it some more. Then gleefully traipse through his encounters until he says, "well, after playtesting this I think we should tone it down abit." Then you can try your best to look innocent. It really is the only way for them to see what the class really looks like. Sort of like 'the mirror cannot reflect itself' thing. |
| dmg_roller05-15-07, 12:16 PM | The highest possible Ive seen with source material: Lvl. 10 Cavalier gets Unstoppable charge, X5 with Lance. On Crit. X7, seen it happen with only a deadly charge and a Paladins smite with a Power attack and about 180 points of damage were inflicted in a single blow.:D |
| starfire31105-15-07, 12:18 PM | I'll go out on a limb and say that this does not stack. Feats rarely stack, and then only if they suck (who in their right mind takes Toughness twice?!). its not a feat, and that is how it worked for deepwood sniper, every few levels they get improved projectile crit, I think was like every 4 levels so to get it 5 times you would need to have like 20 levels in deepwood sniper, this character would be seriously epic. I am guessing this DM made a homebrewed super Deepwood sniper that is really broken. IMO the improved projectile crit was not broken for DS |
| Hida Reju05-15-07, 01:59 PM | The highest Crit multiplier I have ever seen in a real game is x8 using the Maiming weapon quality out of the minitures handbook. This allows you to take a x4 crit weapon and roll a random 1d8 for the actual multiplier. With Weapon master you could possibly get it to a base of x5 then roll a d10 for your crit with his improved crit multiplier class ability. |
| kalstrand05-15-07, 07:58 PM | Maiming was changed in the Magic Item Compendium so that it no longer changes the crit multiplier. Now it adds extra d6's based on the multiplier. |
