When you make a succesful critical hit, which of your damage bonuses are then dobbled ?

i know strength is, but had a little agument with my friends. is damage bonus from weapon spec. also dobbled and what about magic bonuses on your weapon?

if anyone could make a short list of which bonuses that are dobbled it would help a lot
because in PH. it only says speacial damage bonuses like sneak attack and flaming arn't dobbled, but which are?

anything that adds a static bonus to your damage roll is doubled.
Anything that provides extra damage expressed as a dice range is not doubled.

ei. on a crital hit you roll the dice twice and add double your static bonuses (for a times 2 weapon, for a times three weapon you roll the dice 3 times and add tripple your static bonuses etc.)

for example I rogue with sneak attack +3d6, a strength bonus of +2, wielding a +1 flaming rapier gets a critical hit against an ogre that is still flat-footed. to determine the damage the player rolls 2d6 (rapier damage dice twice), adds 6 (double the static bonuses, which are +2 strength and +1 enhancement) then rolls 3d6 (sneak attack damage) and 1d6 (fire damage) for a total of 6d6+6 damage, if the ogre was not flat footed (or flanked) the damage would have been 3d6+6 (2d6 weapon+6 bonuses+1d6 fire).

if the same rogue critted the same flatfooted ogre with a non magical great axe the damage would have been 3d12 (great axe has a x3 multiplier) +9 (strength bonus x1.5 for two handed weapon, trippled) +3d6 (sneak attack)

Hope that helps.

ok, try the back of the players handbook, but from what i can remember the damage dice and the strength bonus are both used in the weapons critical multiplier.

eg, tork hits mailee with a +1 longsword his strength is 20. he rolls a 6 for damage so his damage is 22 + 1 magical bonus.

thats what i think is right, but i personally use is only the damage dice is multiplied, otherwise players will kill the BBEG (big bad evil guy)
in the first round of combat, and that makes it no fair to the DM!

Anything that is a straight static number gets multiplied on a critical. Most damage bonuses fall under this category.

Anything represented as damage dice (beyond the weapon's base damage itself) is not multiplied on a critical hit. Sneak attack, elemental damage on a weapon, etc.

You can also use the variant from the PHB (or DMG?), like I do, that multiplies your end result by the critical modfier of the weapon.

Fighter with a +1 Flaming Longsword, +3 str bonus, crits a Goblin :

(1d8+3+1)*2 +1d6 fire

In this case only the weapon damage dice is rolled once and then multiplied, damage from Sneak Attack and other sources like the flaming aspect of the weapon are not, they are added on later. Although in the actual variant I do not know if this is true, does anyone have a link?

Criticals are obviously more powerful in this manner, but I like it this way. My players also... until they are on the recieving end of one :P

criticals are only more powerful in that manner if you roll well. if you roll poorly for damage you may not deal much more damage than a normal attack.

and yes, as power attack is a static bonus it is also doubled.

The easiest way to determine what gets doubled is it the bonus expressed as dice or a number.

weapon spec: +2 damage

sneak attack: 1d6 damage

+1 weapon: +1 damage

flaming enchantment: 1d6 fire damage

Strength: +4 damage

Of the above, only sneak attack and flaming wouldn't get doubled. So if a person had all of those things, and crit he'd roll twice the weapon (lets say longsword), add double his regular bonuses, and then roll the extra dice.

2d8 + 14 + 1d6 (sa) + 1d6 (flaming)

Power attack keeps getting debated, but the fact is that since its a flat bonus (no rolling involved) then it too gets doubled.

Ex. above hit was also with a power attack mod of +4: 2d8+ 14 + 8 + 2d6 (sa and flaming)

And because the x2 effect of two handing a weapon with power attack, you would take a penalty to your to-hit: -4, get a bonus to damage thats double your penalty: +8, and because that +8 is a set number BEFORE you crit, the x2 effect of criting would double it again: +16

Ex. Above hit but the person two handed it: 2d8 + 14 + 16 + 2d6

This seems contrary to the "multiple of a multiple" part of d&d, but if you reread power attack, you're not actually multiplying anything you are only trading in a penalty for a bonus. It does not say that it counts as a x2.

If you read the critical hit rules in the PHB it says roll damage a number of times equal to the critical multiplier but only add bonus damage dice once.
