But in reading one of the books, I read that "treat 1 as an automatic miss and 20 as an automatic hit." So does that mean that a Rapier would only auto-hit on a 20, but still threat on it's normal roll? And further, if the crit threats and succeeds to get in it's threat range again (confirming a critical) but that's not sufficient to hit the enemies AC, would it become a miss? BOGGLE! Thanks in advance. :) -Tinari the Noobice. |

In the case of your rapier if a roll of 18 or 19 isn't sufficient to hit it For the second question, if you get a critical threat (and it's high enough to hit), then the second role only needs to score a hit, it doesn't need to score a critical threat again. E.g. A roll of 14 or higher hits with said rapier. An 18 is rolled on the attack. That's a critical threat so roll again. If the second roll is 14 or higher then it's a critical hit. |

But specifically the question was, if I need to roll a 19 to beat the person's armor and my weapon threats on 18-20, and I roll an 18 and 18, that's just a miss, mm? By the rules as I read them again, that's just a miss. |
| Ogre4Hire02-04-06, 11:46 AM | If you had rolled an 18 in such a situation, you would have missed and not rolled again because you did not get a Threat. |
| Tyler Do'Urden02-04-06, 01:27 PM | Yeah, I was disappointed too. I conceived this build that took advantage of the notion that a threat is a hit by repeatedly taking Power Critical (Complete Warrior) with the same weapon. Basically, you threat on a 15, and then confirm with a +12 to the attack roll, effectively giving you a 25% chance of having a huge bonus to hit. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland02-04-06, 02:12 PM | I flavor a miss with a crit threat as sparking on the armor, or damaging the surrounding environment. You know, so you at least looked cool. |
| Nom02-04-06, 11:36 PM | Yeah. The rules on critical hits with an improved threat range are on PH ph 140 and very explicit. "In such cases, a roll of lower than 20 is not an automatic hit. An attack roll that doesn't result in a hit is not a threat.". |
