| TheMagister04-30-05, 11:05 AM | My wife is new to DnD. After playing the Xbox version of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II she fell in love with the dwarven rogue crossbow specialist. That's what she wants to play on tabletop RPG night. I have YET to see a good write-up for a crossbow-using ANYTHING. She's a fighter 3 currently (and we're sneaking up on 4th level) so it's still early enough to do anything. We're in a low-magic item campaign (it's actually refreshing) so please stay away from "teh enchament you want most is..." stuff. We're probably going to go with a repeating heavy crossbow as her weapon of choice for focus/specialization. We've (the DM and I) toyed around with the idea of an over-and-under style heavy crossbow so that she could take (and benefit from) the Manyshot feat. That would allow her into the Order of the Bow Initiate PrC. This is the route I would most like her to take. Anyhow, I'm curious as to what ideas the rest of you can contribute. Help! TM |
| Rondulin04-30-05, 11:32 AM | What about the deepwood sniper from Masters of the wild. Projectiles are treated as keen and crit multiplier increases two steps. With the crossbow this would be 17-20/x4. Pretty nice. |
| TheMagister04-30-05, 11:36 AM | A buddy of mine has that book. I'll look into it. Thanks! TM P.S. Keep 'em comin. tm |
| TheMagister04-30-05, 12:18 PM | Checked with the buddy, and the Deepwood Sniper has prereqs out the nose, namely high Hide, Move Silently skill reqs. A fighter with good intel (14) still only has 4 skill points...she'll never make it. Still, it WOULD be nice, wouldn't it? Maybe we'll crossclass her into ranger... TM |
| pres_man04-30-05, 12:52 PM | Go light crossbow -take rapid reload (so she can fire at the same rate as a bow) -take rapid shot (get extra attack each round) -take manyshot (house rule that it can be used with crossbows) Notice that repeating heavy crossbows are better then regular heavy crossbows, but not as good as regular light crossbows since you have to reload a cartridge every couple of rounds with a repeater. |

This is something that I suggested to my DM. He's thinking about it, though be both have reality issues with manyshot being used with a crossbow. With rapid reload, loading a heavy repeating crossbow is reduced to a move action that provokes AoO. (House rule: this feat applies to all crossbows. Normal: This feat may be gained multiple times. Each time you take it, it applies to a new kind of crossbow.) TM |

| reese04-30-05, 09:45 PM | these is me from another thread, try any of these as well: yes, a light and heavy version from various Mongoose Publishing books. Light: a light crossbow with two seperate firing mechanisms one stacked on top of the other, seperated by a thin reinforced peice of wood. Can be used in two fashions, the wielder can fire each bolt seperately, removing the need to reload before his next shot, or fire both bolts simultaneously at the same target for a -2 penalty to his attack roll. (double recoil and grip to press both triggers) Reloading the top string is normal for a light crossbow, the bottom is a full-round action as you need to split the crossbow. Stats: 55gp 1d6/1d6(S) 1d8/1d8(M) 19-20 x2 80ft 6lbs martial? Heavy: see light above. Reloading the top and bottom strings are full round actions each, as per normal heavy crossbow. Stats: 80gp 1d8/1d8(S) 1d10/1d10(M) 19-20 x2 120ft 10lbs martial? Now that thats out of the way and I have the book out, time for the UBER CROSSBOW OF DOOM!!!! I present the Elephant Crossbow!! A monstrosity of wood and steel this enormous crossbow stands nearly 5 ft high, has a bow the size of normal shortbow, a string actually made of steel and fires bolts closer to javelins in size. This crossbow is so large you need two hands to hold it, let alone fire. Reloading is a full round action that provokes AoO. Rapid Reload will reduce time as normal to a move action. Stats: 250gp 3d4(S) 4d4(M) 19-20 x2 130ft 20lbs exotic Anyone else want a portable seige weapon? Anyone? :end quote, just some ideas for actual other weapons, my dime and a half. also look here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=5108928 |
| No-man04-30-05, 10:37 PM | Light Crossbow basically the same as a Bow, but add Rapid Reload. Then take: Point Blank Shot. Rapid Shot. Precise Shot. Weapon Focus. If Human, you'd have them all at 3rd level Fighter. |
| NeueRegel05-01-05, 01:03 AM | Reese there was replying to me in his quote above. Thanks to his help, my game ended up with this addition: -------------------- Dual Crossbow (Double Crossbow) - Exotic Weapon Light: a light crossbow with two seperate firing mechanisms, one stacked on top of the other, but keyed to a single half/full-pull trigger. Can be used in two fashions: The wielder can fire each bolt seperately*, removing the need to reload before his next shot, or fire both bolts simultaneously** at the same target for a -2 penalty to his single attack roll. (double recoil sync issues). Reloading the top string is normal for a light crossbow, the bottom is a full-round action.*** Stats: 55gp 1d6/1d6(S) 1d8/1d8(M) 19-20 x2 80ft 6lbs Heavy: see light above. Reloading the top and bottom*** strings are full round actions each, as per normal heavy crossbow. Stats: 80gp 1d8/1d8(S) 1d10/1d10(M) 19-20 x2 120ft 10lbs DM’s notes: * Requiring the full attack action if the user gets multiple attacks per round. ** As a standard action. Precision damage is applied only once. *** The feat 'Rapid Reload' may only be applied to the top strings of these bows, as applicable to a crossbow of it's weight class. However, the standard action of a dual shot is never in addition to the full attack action associated with 'Rapid Reload'. --------------------- Thanks again Reese, and Good Gaming TheMagister, & The Magistress ;) NeueRegel |
