| RPGDudeNYC11-12-04, 09:49 AM | I'm doing various searches in the SRD and my copies of the PHB and DMG, but I'm having a hard time finding reference to this question. Most likely because I haven't used the right search word. Hopefully someone here can help me. If a large monster falls onto a medium-sized character, how should I calculate the damage done to the character? Thanks. |
| CruelDM11-12-04, 10:15 AM | I dont think that that scenario is actually covered anywhere in the SRD. If it were to deal damage at all I would house rule probably 1d6 non-lethal for a large creature, 2d6 non-lethal for huge, 3d6 non-lethal for gargantuan and finally 4d6 non-lethal for collossal. Modify this if the creature is made of something other than flesh or has a higher density than would be expected by either doubling the damage and/or making the damage lethal. Also allow a reflex save DC=10 +damage dealt to avoid being pinned. Pinned creatures can extract themselves using a full round action for a number of rounds = damage dealt. Halve this time if aided by another. Im sure others can probably think of better mechanics, but this should work on the fly. |
| adnauseum11-12-04, 10:17 AM | There is a listing for crushing damage under Dragons in the MM which you might be able to use based on size category. |
| The_Fan11-12-04, 10:23 AM | Use the rules for Falling Objects in the DMG, page 303 and estimate from there. Essentially for every 200 lbs of the falling character's weight, he will do 1d6 points of damage if he falls ten feet, +1d6 for every additional ten feet. So if a troll (400 lbs, 2d6) falls 50 feet (4d6), that's 6d6 damage. |
| CruelDM11-12-04, 10:32 AM | Sorry, in my reply I assumed you meant "toppling onto" not falling from a height. Like if a large creature was killed or knocked out and toppled onto a creature. |
| The_Fan11-12-04, 10:37 AM | Rereading it, I think you may be right. The same system could be used though, only halve the monster's weight and treat it as though the monster "fell" from 3/4 of the height it did. |

| CruelDM11-12-04, 05:11 PM | LOL true, but an elephant would be a Huge beast, not a large one. Maybe make the damage lethal with an equal die of non-lethal. So a large creature would do 1d6 lethal and 1d6 non-lethal. |
