It doesn't state it in the DMG, but do the better effects of the cube reflect the lesser ones? Example: I use the cube and activate the 5 charge "Protection from Magic" effect. Does it also protect against living things, nonliving things, gases/winds, etc?

It might or might not, seeing how there is a 6 charge effect that protects from everything...but it makes some sense if they did perform the functions of the lesser effects.

No, they do not do the lower protections.

But you can activate multiple effects at once, they do not deactivate each other.

I.E. You can press 4 and 1, using 5 charges to keep out magic, gasses, and wind, but still let living things and non-living things in.
