Is this just treated as a Sunder attack? I can't seem to find this in the PHB, not sure if it's even in there. If it is just treated as a Sunder, what's the hardness on flesh? LOL

IIRC there is a variant rule in the DMG for this type of occurrance. However, normally this does not happen in combat.

1) There is no variant rule in the DMG for cutting off limbs.

2) If you were to use a Sunder type system, please remember that to sunder a weapon, you first need to do ALL it's hitpoints, not a fraction of them. I.E. To cut off the arm of a man that has 30 hitpoitns would take 30 hitpoints of damage.

Basically, you can't do it unless the guy is already dead.

There are no RAW for cutting off limbs of your enemies. Believe me, you don't want to open that can of worms cause then your enemies might decide to try it on you!

Your just gonna have to Add Hoc this one

Maybe i was thinking of called shots.

As a side question; what is the purpose of the reatachment/regrowth portion of regeneration?

Yes, but that's based on what type of MATERIAL the weapon is made of. So this is how it would go:

(1.) You are trying to Sunder a carried or worn object so your sunder attempt would be against their AC (This is most likely one reason a lot of monsters have a "Natural" AC bonus. This is if they aren't wearing armor.
(2.) If they are wearing armor then you FIRST have to Sunder their armor to get through, that means completely breaking through a suit of Plate Mail would be quite a task, this is where sunder feats come into play.
3. One problem: Decapitation. This makes alot of creatures and NPC's with high level extremely vulnerable. One lucky sunder attempt could take 'em out hrmmm...

Very nice question, they must assume that you made a sunder attempt to cut off say, a troll's arm or something.

ALSO, can we post images from D&D books on the forums? I would post what it says in the PHB....

Sunder a carried or worn object = Attack roll against the object's AC

Object's AC as per the PHB 3.5 = 10 + Size Mod + Dex Mod of the character
*Adding the "Natural" AC bonus for any creatures that have it should apply there as well, I think that's what I'll do.*

In conclusion,

To cut off the limb of an enemy in combat:

(1.) You have to break their armor if they are wearing any first off, so just make a regular Sunder attack

(2.) When you break through their armor, or if they aren't wearing any, then you attempt to Sunder a carried or worn object. If you roll good, then you've successfully cut off your opponent's arm, head, leg, whatever.

My DM only allows us to sunder enemy limbs when we have them pinned, which generally isn't too hard when you team up on an enemy. Hold person helps this quite a bit as well. He usually treats a limb as having 1/4 to 1/10th of a character's hp, depending on the limb. He doesn't allow us to go for eyes or head, but removing a spellcaster's hands can make him easy to keep in custody.
