| the_last_knight04-12-06, 01:01 PM | What do you think about this weapon (note: I am fairly new to d&d so be gentle…) It is a wooden stick that has had it’s center removed so that it looks like a tube. It has cuts along it’s side so that small crystal lenses can be inserted into it. At one end of the stick there is some kind of device that when squeezed, sends a short blast of light out thru the crystals and out the other end. The crystals magnify the light so much that it can do damage. Instant laser rifle. Now I need the stats for it, please help, Thank you. :D ( p.s. you could add/remove crystals to increase/decrease damage, as for ammo, the device on the end could have 20-40 charges, and they would cost ?gp to buy. Now you don’t half to feel guilty giving out laser guns in a fantasy setting!) |
| Dalthbar04-12-06, 01:04 PM | I'd just make a wand of Searing Light (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/searingLight.htm) - you can make the wand effectively look like whatever you'd want (e.g., put a crystal on the end, etc.) if you really want to. Edit: Rules for pricing magic items (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/creatingMagicItems.htm#creatingWands) (wands are down the page a bit). |
| KublaiKhan04-12-06, 01:07 PM | You could just use the table for 'futuristic weapons' that's in the DMG, as I recall. It's got Laser Pistol, Laser Rifle, Antimatter Rifle, and Flamer. The power source could be a wand of Searing Light or Daylight or Prismatic Spray or whatever you like. Structure it like a crossbow or something to eliminate the need for a UMD check, I guess...if that's what you're going for. |
| ReverendCow04-12-06, 01:16 PM | Go with what KublaiKhan said, but use the psionic power, Energy Ray, using the Fire damage. (Ranged) Touch attacks rock. The beam can look like whatever you want. Going with the magnifying crystals would be way too cost-ineffective to work properly. |
| the_last_knight04-12-06, 06:29 PM | Ok so, Dmg(m):* crit: x2 range: 75ft weight: 7lb damage type:-- *a regular diamond adds 1d2 of damage. A red ruby adds 1d4 damage. A fire opal adds 1d6 damage. A typical gun would have 3-5 crystal slots. |
| Ozymandias V.04-12-06, 06:42 PM | The magnifying crystals idea wouldn't work anyway, because that isn't how a laser works. |
| Beeblebrox04-12-06, 06:52 PM | The magnifying crystals idea wouldn't work anyway, because that isn't how a laser works. Um... no offense, but this is a FANTASY game. It doesn't have to be believable, magic can explain everything. |
| OravennasBrother04-12-06, 07:06 PM | Ok so, Dmg(m):* crit: x2 range: 75ft weight: 7lb damage type:-- *a regular diamond adds 1d2 of damage. A red ruby adds 1d4 damage. A fire opal adds 1d6 damage. A typical gun would have 3-5 crystal slots. So a "Laser Gun" (Sic) with 5 fire opals would deal 5d6 damage per attack? Lasers have a LOT of limitations as weapons, you might be better off calling it an "Energy Gun" Dependingon the level, you might find this comparable to a weapon with ~+3 Enchantment (3 different 1d6 energy adds - flaming, shock, acid) with a base 1d8+mighty. A rule of similar effect for similar cost, to make it worth around 18,000 GP. |
| JadeSpider964304-12-06, 09:37 PM | crystals and a light source don't make a "laser gun", they make a "laser pointer" at best...more likly you just have a colored flashlight. Just stick with the straight up wand of Searing Light, or make an use-activated crossbow of Searing light or something...(120,000gp) |
| CryoSilver04-12-06, 09:53 PM | Crystals and carbon dioxide on the other hand... I say make something: Arcane Blaster; this small rod can fire a Scorching Ray (CL 3) three times per day, as an attack action. Cost: 7,500 gp |
