Ok, I bet this has been asked before, but why does only one weapon deal d12 damage? Even the enlarged versions use 2d6. Are there any weapons other than Greataxe that deal straight d12?

A few others deal d12 if memory serves, most of them are in supplement books tho'. As to your question the Greataxe does that to balance out it's higher critical multiplier and the fact that it is a martial rather than exotic weapon.

High level monks used to do a d12. They seem to be phasing out the d12. Why? Because nobody likes it.

I like it. I wish the greatsword were d12 instead of 2d6.

the d12 is a very little used and somewhat neglected die. Poor d12. I use it whenever i can. I always use greataxes, even if I am using a character that wouldnt look good with a huge axe. mmmm....Ranger with greataxe! Even better--Half-giant ranger with TWO greatswords.

Nope that is not why, x3 is perfectly balanced with 19-20/x2. The fact is they wanted the greataxe to be more "random" perhaps to play off the idea that is swung wildly. 2d6 much more consistent than 1d12 which has just as much chance of doing 7 damage as doing 12 damage as doing 1 damage.

the d12 is such a cool die though! I tend to use it whenever I need to roll d3s (when I'm not stealing my friend's d24 for it anyway)

I know a guy who has a d12 that only has I, II and III on it. He uses it as a d3.

The d12 is the red-headed stepchild of of the D&D dice family. I seriously think that the higher-ups in Wizards don't like it for some reason, and would like to phase it out.

I like d12 very much, more than 2d6
I know that 2d6 as a better minimum, better average, le chance to make low value, but D12 has more chance to inflict high damage that is more fun ;)

2d6
2 -> 2.7%
3 -> 5.5%
4 -> 8.3%
5 -> 11.1%
6 -> 13.8%
7 -> 16.6%
8 -> 13.8%
9 -> 11.1%
10 -> 8.3%
11 -> 5.5%
12 -> 2.7%
AVERAGE 7

D12
ALL RESULT -> 8.3%
AVERAGE 6.5
Better chance to obtain a 11 or a 12 is more fun and i can easly accept to obtain a 1 or a 2 every now and then ;)

I like rolling the d12... I think I'm going to start making d12 weapons. It's just not fair.

My favorite d12 weapon: The Goliath greathammer, from Races of Stone. 1d12/x4, 30 lb. Bludgeoning Exotic 2-handed weapon. Also grants a +2 bonus on opposed attack rolls made to sunder items.

Leilond .

A) Your math is correct.

B) There is a far easier way to get the same result.

How to get an average for any xDy dice.

average = x * (1+y)/2

1d12 becomes 1 * (1+12)/2 = 6.5
2d6 becomes 2 * (1+6)/2 = 7

Aww, man. The poor little guys don't get no love.

I think every class needs at least one instance of d12 throwing (One crazy level where you roll d12 instead of d6 for the Rogue, for example). :P

He wasn't concerned with the average...He was concerned with showing the likelihood of maximum damage.

why does only one weapon deal d12 damage? Even the enlarged versions use 2d6. I don't know /why/, exactly, but IMHO, d12 fits the progressions on the weapons tables better than 2d6. d12 does exactly 1 more average damage than d10, while 2d6 does 1.5 more and has a different distribution (bell-curve instead of linear, IIRC). The greatsword should really do d12.

However, I think the reason the greatsword does 2d6 might be that the designers wanted it to be a more common choice for adventurers than the greataxe. The greataxe, then, does d12 because that's what a two-handed martial weapon with ('just') a x3 crit /should/ do. It's the greatsword that's off.

Despite adding nothing new heres my opinion
Love Da d12 Made a couple great axe clerics to use this poor neglected axe.
Agreed with the d12 for great axe for the very random affect. hit by a great axe is massive injury to glancing nick.

Long live the d12

I think they made greatsword 2d6 for variety. But the progressions of weapon sizes, now that you bring that up, really SHOULD be d10 to d12. It makes more sense.

Maybe missed Leilond's point.

Chances of a maximum hit:
1d12 = 1 in 12
2d6 = 1 in 36.

Yes the 2d6 is a statistical winner in the long run but few fights are 'in the long run', the 1d12 is more likely to deliver the quick fix required.
