Every master thrower has it's amuintion of choise enchanted eventually with returning. That way they are never out of toys to use.

There's a simmilar enchantment that can go on the bow or crossbow itself, that returns an arrow or bolt that misses the target. That name and it's location would be nice.

But what is really needed, is the enchantment that alows an arrow to return to the quiver, if it HITS.

I would like to recreate the black arrow of slaying that was used against the dragon Smaug. Just for flavour. I've been told that making it a minor artifact would make it easy, and specifying that the powers can only be invoked if it's the last arrow fired at a given target by that person. But I don't want to go the easy way.

:b: Well you could use this...

Quiver of Anariel:Quivers of Anariel appear to be typical arrow containers capable of holding a score of arrows. However, the quivers automatically replenish themselves with standard or magical arrows, such that they are always full. Some quivers also create arrows made of special materials, such as adamantine, cold iron, or alchemical silver.
Once an arrow it taken from the quiver, it must be used within 1 round or it vanishes.
Moderate conjuration; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, magic weapon, minor creation; Price 28,000 gp (standard arrows), 29,000 gp (masterwork arrows), 32,000 gp (+1 arrows), 44,000 gp (+2 arrows), 64,000 gp (+3 arrows), 92,000 gp (+4 arrows), 128,000 gp (+5 arrows); Add an additional +6,000 gp for adamantine arrows, +4,005 gp for cold iron arrows, or +200 gp for alchemical silver arrows; Weight 1 lb.

This can be found on the WOTC main page.

Something I considered once was to make a permanent arrow with the same cost as a weapon. Part of making it +1 is to enchance it with Iron Wood spell to remove the break chance. Than a slight change to the returning ability to return to the quiver it was draw from. The draw back I added was that the range is drop in half, because the arrow weights more. So 1 +1arrow of returning costs 8,000. Make four of them and your good for a full round.

Only arrow I know that returns to the quiver was a Arrow Feather my daughters character had in a Rokugan campaign we played in. It was a long Peacock feather that when drawn from the quiver changed into a +2 arrow. After it was fired, it would magically re-appear in the quiver 2 rounds later. SO she could use it every other round.

Arrows are supposed to break when they hit. if you want a returning one, just price it as a dagger instead of ammunition.

So the solution of making it a minor artifact or named power is the only path as it's not created elsewhere?

IIRC, the weapon special quality is called "Homing." Imagine a throwing dagger that disappears after striking the target, and re-appears in its sheath.

I'm not sure that this quality could be applied to arrow and bolts, though. According to the core rulebooks, an arrow or bolt that hits it target is destroyed, one that misses has a 50% chance of being destroyed or lost.
