| soulslost11-29-06, 02:35 PM | hey, I checked the srd but it doesnt list any changes between large sized spike chains and medium sized spiked chains. Does anything actually change when a spiked chain goes from medium to large? |
| tarkin11-29-06, 03:00 PM | The damage goes up. 2d4 is medium, 2d6 is for a Large. |
| tyrecian11-29-06, 03:02 PM | everything changes, apparently there is a chart in the PHB that identifies this sort of change... i don't own a PHB currently, but i understand that it is PHB 114 weapon size increments... now this might be something that the DM rules on, or it might say.. i am not sure if 2dice up the same way... like maybe 2d4 become 2d6, but i know they all increase... i am pretty sure that the range increment on the SC also increases making it a threat range increment of 15', and assuming the special nature of the spiked chain you probably threaten every bit of the surrounding 15' of you large character.. nasty wow with combat reflexes you really could (and high Dex of course, and an enlarge) keep a party protected... add improved trip to this and it would be very difficult to get through to the party of wizards =) |
| tarkin11-29-06, 03:08 PM | The threat range is a function of the character, not the weapon. And 15 is the wrong number, even then. That is, a medium person using a Large Spiked chain still threatens only in 10 ft. So do a a Large, Long person, (i.e. Centaurs) It would take a Large, Tall person, (Ogre) to get a natural reach of 10 ft, which means using a full reach weapon such as a Spiked Chain results in a full reach of 0-20ft (not 15) |
| tyrecian11-29-06, 03:27 PM | thanks Tarkin, for the clarification, i was just waxing... i didnt really know... sorry shouldnt have been screwing off =P so a wand of enlarge which enlarges a character of medium to large size would make a character tall? Cause they wouldnt be considerred long, therefore since their weapons and armor and equipment also increase, they would then receive the benefit of a 20' reach? so the scenario in my above situation would still be viable only adding 5' to the threat range of the aforementioned dwarf? (granted it would be difficult to define a dwarf as "tall" but i think you get my drifting drifting drift =) on edit, assume that char in the above situation was a dwarf for sake of argument =) |
| Pandaemoni11-29-06, 04:12 PM | A reach weapon like a spiked chain doubles the natural reach of the character. As such the reach of a large character using a spiked chain is 20 feet, rather than 15 feet. (See, for confirmation, Sage Advice in Dragon 333.) That's why Enlarge Person can make your ordinary chain fighter truly fearsome with combat reflexes or whirlwind attack--he a a 40' wide zone of death around him. |
| tarkin11-29-06, 04:16 PM | Spiked chains normally have a reach of 10ft. That dwarf (who does count as Tall), gets the reach of 20ft, a 10ft improvement, when he becomes large using Enlarge Person. That same Large dwarf, also takes up 10ft across space. His "blockage" is 20 ft to the right, 10 ft of dwarf flesh, then 20ft to the left, for a total length of 50 ft. That, he can stand in the middle of a 50ft corridor and you can not get past him without taking an AoO. Trust me, that reach is very powerfull. Note, for a real nasty treat, try using it as a Were-Tiger. In Hybrid form, you are already Large(Tall), using the Enlarge Person spell, you become Huge(Tall), You take up 15ft and have 15ft reach normally, 30ft with a Huge Spiked Chain, so you can block a corridor 75 ft wide. |

If you don't own a PHB (and even if you do) this (http://www.d20srd.org/index.htm) site is a most excellent resource. |
| Nezkrul11-29-06, 05:39 PM | but Enlarge sucks, I mean come on, you get +2 strength but all of your gear's weight is multiplied by 8... good luck remaining in an upright position after that :D |
| dengarbountyhunter11-29-06, 08:14 PM | There is a not-so-hard way to bypass Attacks of Opportunities; having cover. As long as there are enough people (rocks, tables, whatever) between you and the AoO-happy giant dwarf, he doesn't get to smack you with his uberpowered weapon. |
| Zakuninja11-30-06, 11:07 PM | But if your a huge dwarf with an even bigger chain with big heavy metal spikes all over it i think you can knock all those tables and people and such out of the way |
| dengarbountyhunter12-02-06, 02:11 PM | How would he knock off these tables? Sunder? With a PIERCING weapon? |
| Zakuninja12-02-06, 03:29 PM | im talking realistically. a spiked chain is a heavy thing of linked metal that has spike all over it. one weilded by someone 40 feet tall is gonna be pretty heavy. so its kinda like the weapon is bullrushing the tables but there arent any rules for that. |

Ordinarily though, yeah...cover/terrain can be quite effective against reach weapons. |
