What exactly goes through damage reduction ? I'm confused with all the different types of damage reduction . For instance if you have damage reduction cold iron do magic weapons still affect you ? And what about all the other types of damage reduction ?

All weapons affect you to a degree.

So lets start of with simple DR. A zombie has DR 5/Slashing.
EX: Bob the fighter attacks and hits the zombie.
-If Bob is using a Longsword, a weapon that deals slashing damage, then damage is rolled normally.
-If Bob is using a club, or a bow, bludgeoning and piercing weapons respectively, then roll damage and subtract 5 from it.

Now it gets more complex than that.
EX: Bob's fighting a were-creature. He hits. Were-creature's have DR/Silver
-If Bob has a silver longsword damage is rolled normally.
-If Bob's sword is something else, say adamantine, then you subtract the appropriate amount. Let's say it has 5/silver, then you would subtract 5 damage from Bob's roll.

Are you seeing the pattern yet?

It gets more complex as you go on.

The only thing that goes through DR is the type or material listed after the slash.

A DR listing is DR #/(material/type to bypass the DR).

For instance, DR 5/magic needs a magic weapon, a weapon with at least a +1 enhancement bonus, or else you take 5 points off the damage roll.

DR 10/silver means you need a silver weapon or you take 10 points off the damage roll.

DR 15/good and magic means you need a magic weapon with a good alignment (such as with the holy weapon enhancement) or else you take 15 off the damage roll.

The numbers can be varied, but the item after the slash is the important part for determining what is needed to bypass DR.

In addition, DR nevers subtracts damage from elemental damage (fire, acid, etc), or magical damage (like Magic Missile).

There used to be a rule that a strong enough magic weapon could get through all kinds of DR, but that has been nixed with 3.5. Now, a magic weapon gets through DR/Magic.

DR/Cold Iron is only circumvented by a Cold Iron weapon, and the things that are never affected by DR.

So basicly one could argue that in civilised society Dr/cold iron is probably the most potent as not a lot people would have cold iron weapons... Thanks this really cleared things up alot for me ....

Depends. Both Fey and Demons have Damage Reduction against anything but cold iron, so I'd say, that damage reduction #/cold iron is the most common form of damage reduction.
#/silver is for devils and lycanthropes, who are usually much more rare, and #/adamantine is only for golems, who are probably the most rarely seen creatures of all (depending on the game world).

so what's the best DR a character can have? I think the only DR I ever had was 3/- with a adamantine fullplate

DR/silver makes the most sense because silver weapons have a -1 penalty.

DR 1/silver is effectively equivelent to DR 1/-

In addition, if you have DR /Silver (or DR/Cold Iron for that matter), and you cast the spell Stone Skin, then you now have DR/Silver AND DR/Adamantine.

As no weapon can be made of both Silver and Adamantine, you effecitvely have DR /-.

(Note, there is magic that can make the weapon count as both silver and adamantine, and of course in an Anti-Magic field, you lose the Stone Skin)
