I used a Grick (MM3.5) recently with Damage Reduction 10/Magic.

I assumed this was DR 10 to all but magical damage (like from a Fireball spell).

Afterwards I was doing some reading on DR and wondered if that was correct, or does 10/Magic mean any magical weapon can overcome the DR?

Thanks all.

DR does not count toward spells, only weapons. And yes, DR/magic is overcome by any magic weapon.

Thanks for that.

I forgot that magic negates DR...

I was curious though as to what the difference was between 10/+1 and 10/Magic.

As any magical weapon MUST have a +1 enhancement it seems surperfluos to have both entries...

In 3.0 some dr required a certain plus on a weapon to overcome such as 10/+1 or 10/+2.

In 3.5 they changed it 10/magic so that any magic weapon will overcome the dr.

yeah, basically in 3.0 they completely removed the X/+Y mechanic.

it's now based on special materials, (none of which can overcome other DR types... so DR 5/silver can't be overcome using cold iron, or adamantite, just silver) alignment, and magic. any magic weapon penetrates DR X/magic.

oh, and epic... almost forgot that one.

DR X/magic is basically useless after CR 3-4 as every magical weapon can overcome it.

Personally, I'd like to see the devs mess up and put in damage reduction that is impossible to overcome:

DR 10/slashing and bludgeoning
DR 5/cold iron and adamantine

(this could actually happen with carless use of templates)

Dr magic was useless in 3.0 as well, since the iconic party contained a cleric and a wizard, and GMW has 1hr/level duration, nothing was higher than what a properly leveled cleric/wizard could overcome on everyone's weapons.

Mellowship Slinky: You can overcome (cold iron & adamantine) some spells or the metalline enchantment, I think. I don't know of any way to add to DR types though, as they always overlap.

as for DR X/magic being useless, please note that there are very few creatures that are *just* DR X/magic. Gargoyles and mephits are DR 5/magic. Vampires are DR 10/magic AND SILVER. Liches are DR 15/magic AND BLUDGEONING. Constructs are /admanatine, demons and devils are different materials and alignments, etc.

As a house rule IMC, DR X/magic comes in 5-pt steps. +1 magic enhancement only overcomes the first 5 DR. +2 magic enhancement overcomes the next 5 DR (i.e. DR 10). +3 magic enhancement overcomes the next 5 DR (i.e. DR 15). You need a +3 mace to fully injure the lich, but a +1 dagger is fine against the gargoyle. (+4 and +5 enhancements are reserved, pretty much, for minor and major artifacts.)

And cold iron/adamantine can be overcome by magic that makes a weapon count as adamantine even if it is not, without actually chaning it to adamantine.

But that still required 4 or more spell slots per day.

Penetrating /magic is nearly guranteed without the need for spells.

don't most of the spells that do this specifically say that any special qualities of the original item's materials are temporarily subsumed by the spell? I'm sure "Touch of Adamantine" in BoED does (not sure about others, though)

Personally, I'd like to see the devs mess up and put in damage reduction that is impossible to overcome:

DR 10/slashing and bludgeoning
DR 5/cold iron and adamantine

Some weapons, notably natural weapons, are multiple forms of damage type. Thus, a bear's bite would penetrate DR 10/slashing and bludgeoning.

As was pointed out earlier though, pretty much every spell that changes a weapon's composition for purposes of DR penetration suppresses any former properties of that weapon, so your second example is probably always impossible.

But yeah, like Mula said, look at level 7 Barbarians. :)
