He takes 5 strength damage. Simple. Damage reduction only applies to hit point damage.

To be wholly accurate it would depend on what is doing the ability damage.

If the damage was due to an injury type poison then the weapon that delivered the poinson would have to do more than 7 points of damage for the poison to take effect. If its a touch attack or spell then DR provides no protection.

From the SRD: "Whenever damage reduction completely negates the damage from an attack, it also negates most special effects that accompany the attack, such as injury type poison, a monk’s stunning, and injury type disease. Damage reduction does not negate touch attacks, energy damage dealt along with an attack, or energy drains. Nor does it affect poisons or diseases delivered by inhalation, ingestion, or contact."

waxing barbarians? that WOULD take some damage reduction.....
but yes, as stated above, unless the attack bypassed the damge reduction then the effect doesnt take place....good thing there are plenty of things that bypass damage reduction...cause one of my players got a hold of the savage species book and has been taking the "roll with it" feat and the "improved damage reduction" feat.......which i of course had to have him eaten a few times with swallow whole abilities out of a sense of propriety....
