how do you go about tell which form of damage reduction is first in line?

if that didnt make sense lets got with this example:

lvl11 warlock/lich
the lich template gives dr 15/bludgeoning and the levels of warlock give dr 3/cold iron so say someone had a steel morningstar and no str bonus/penalty so the star deals 1d6 piercing/bludgeoning and lets say he got a 6 for damage against said lich.

if warlock dr went first then the damage would be reduced by 3 since the damage was equal parts b/s then each of the damages would be reduced by 1.5 so there would be 1.5p and 1.5 b coming then the lich's dr would take effect and cancel out the piercing dropping the damage down to 1.5b thats assuming the warlocks dr "goes first"

now if it was the other way around the 6 damage would be spilt 3b/3s and the lich's dr would drop the p off bringing it down to only 3b and then the warlocks dr would drop it down to 0.

any insight?

First off, let me clear up a few things:

If you have Damage reduction from more than one source, they do not apply one after the other. You only apply the best one.

If damage is multiple types (Piercing and bludgeoning, for instance) the damage is not split up into fractions of some of one type and some of the other. 6 points of P/B damage is 6 points of damage that has both descriptors. DR/bludgeoning is bypassed by damage that is bludgeoning meaning the 6 points of damage would be entirely unaffected by it.

So, in the example you give, the dr/B is bypassed. The dr 3/cold iron is the best DR vs. this attack, so you subtract 3 from the damage and 3 gets through.

To use another example, say a fighter hits this lich with a steel greatsword for 20 points of damage. The dr 15/Bludgeoning is the best DR for this attack, so 15 points are subtracted and 5 damage gets through. The DR/cold iron doesn't matter here because the other DR surpasses it.

If a creature has damage reduction from more than one source, the two forms of damage reduction do not stack. Instead, the creature gets the benefit of the best damage reduction in a given situation. It's in the DMG, near the back.

You've got DR 15/bludgeoning and 3/cold iron.

A steel or cold iron longsword would not bypass 15/bludgeoning. A steel mace would not bypass 3/cold iron. A cold iron mace would deal full damage.
