Reading the above part of the SRD, it sounds as though equipment should be taking damage durring combat. Does anyone out there play this way? If so I fail to see clearly how to integrate it?

I worked out a system a while ago about how you could track damage to weapons and armor through normal use, but it ends up being more bookkeeping than it's worth. It's easier to just assume that characters are repairing their equipment whenever they have downtime. Why else would every class have Craft as a class skill?

I don't see a direct line of reasoning here.
Breaking an object is not the same as having an object broken.
If you institute something along these lines, then someone could burn through two or three weapons trying to break someone else's, much less the damage that a weapon takes from bashing up against armor.
I see this as something that completely "favors" the DM. The monsters only have to last long enough to wear down the characters. Eventually the fighter will have went through dozens of weapons and be down to whatever they managed to pick up from the monsters that they have defeated, if, in fact, the monsters were even carrying any.
Add in the fact that spellcasters have little to fear from this, as spells are the bulk of their offense, monks never have to worry about breaking their hands, and if you use psionics, they don't have to concern themselves with this either, with the exception of psychic warriors (who still have other alternatives).
So who does this really hurt? The fighters, barbarians, paladins, and rangers (and any other classes that rely on melee weapons to do their job) of the world.
