Hey guys, I was wondering what your take on Aura of Chaos (Devoted Spirit Stance from Tome of Battle) was. Essentially, it says you get to reroll all maximum melee damage dice rolls and add the original roll, the reroll(s), and the final roll. This seems far too powerful compared to Aura of Perfect Order (Natural 11 1/round). Essentially, could you just buy an item with damage boosters (frost, bane, etc.) and reroll those too or would this only work for BASE melee weapon damage rolls? This same thing could apply to spells too.

Furthermore, why do these stances not demand a proper alignment to take them?

Thanks,
Bryant

Does anybody know the answer to this question?

Interesting question, I believe this would only function on the actualy melee strike, for it says when rolling for a melee attack. Damage boosters such as frost, shock and all the don't result directly from the weapon, it's just energy damage at the end. I think only the original damage would be calculated. Although, I think something like sneak attack could be added in. Also, I don't think this is too powerful, I don't remember if you asked that, but compairing to some of the other stances this one looks just fine to me, unless you use weighted dice ;)

Without knowing the exact text of the ability, it sounds like only the base damage would be affected. It seems like it would be similar to a critical, where all bonus dice are left alone. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but that's the feel I get.

The text states "when rolling damage for a melee attack..."

I would rule it is only the base damage of the attack, as well as precision based damage (sneak attacks, etc).

This ability is good, but I think Aura of Triumph blows it out of the water. The real weak one of the group is Aura of Tyranny.

These stances of an alignment descriptor, much like a spell, and are therefore restricted by alignment.

"A crusader's alignment reflects her chose cause, and in some cases molds the maneuvers she can use."

I have interpreted this as similar to a Cleric's restriction on aligmnet-based spells.

Alright, thanks guys.

In regards to the alignment...other maneuvers (Law Bearer's Strike, I think) and the other aligned strikes do have an alignment prereq. so I was just asking about the consistency on this one. All of the stances lack this prereq.

Thanks for the input...

P.S. Now I know why the Devoted Spirit blade is a falchion (2d4 damage), you have a 25% chance of getting extra damage on either of the rolls, but still decent damage! Luckily, darts can't be used as melee weapons.
