This evening my players were fighting a Titan and one of them asked if he could disintegrate the Titan's Gargantuan +4 Adamantine Warhammer. Now I'm sure that he can but I have no idea how to do that.I'm sure this is covered in the rules but I'm not sure where to look.

How does the player roll to hit the weapon? (sunder? Ranged Touch?)

Does the item get a save?

How do you figure the HP on a Gargantuan +4 Adamantine Warhammer?

Thanks Much!

Off the top of my head...

I think it's a touch attack to hit an enemies weapon anyway and disintergrate (I think) is a touch attack... So, yes, ranged touch.

Attended magical items get saves based off their user's saves.

And not a clue on the last part. xD Sorry.

Disintegrate (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/disintegrate.htm) is indeed a ranged touch attack.

Reading the description, it seems like a targeted weapon that fails its fortitude save is immediately detroyed, or takes 5d6 damage if it passes its fortitude save. Since you're specifically targetting the weapon, the hammer uses its own saving throw, which is 2 + one-half its caster level, rounded down (see Saving Throws Against Magic Item Powers (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/magicItemBasics.htm#savingThrowsAgainstM agicItemPowers)).

Finally, its hp. Since it's adamantine (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialMaterials.htm#adamantine), it has one-third more hitpoints than normal; a warhammer, being a one-handed hafted weapon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/exploration.htm#smashinganObject), has 5 hp normally, translating to 6 hp (since you always round down). Multiplying it by two for each size category larger than medium, you're now at 48 (6 x 2 x 2 x 2; Medium -> Large -> Huge -> Gargantuan).

Unless you can afford to cast it at least twice, looks like disintegrate isn't an optimal tactic, since you're only gonna do a maximum of 30 damage per hit.

So what would be the caster level for a Gargantuan +4 Adamantine Warhammer?

I know how to figure it for a +4 Adamantine Warhammer but does the caster level go up any for it being so large?

Also what would the hardness of the warhammer be? Does that even come into effect with a disintegrate?

From what i remember from the rules, the warhammer would use its own save or the save of its owner, wichever is the highest, regardless wether it is targeted directly, or indirectly.

And the HP is also increased by the +4 enchantment, dont remember how much.

The caster lvl for the weapon is 3 x enchantment bonus, in this case 12 :-) the size only affects the manufacture of the weapon, not enchanting it.

Since you're specifically targetting the weapon, the hammer uses its own saving throw, which is 2 + one-half its caster level, rounded down (see Saving Throws Against Magic Item Powers).

That's only true for unattended objects. If you're carrying the item, you use your own saving throw. This is detailed on page 166 of the player's handbook.

So what would be the caster level for a Gargantuan +4 Adamantine Warhammer?

I guess CL 12 like a regular +4 weapon. Weapons made for halflings and gnomes don't have a lower CL do they? :D.

By the way, why wouldn't this be a sundering special attack?

A warhammer is listed as a one handed hafted weapon - base HP for the medium version is 5HP.

Double the HP for each size category - so times 8 = 40HP

SRD says:
Hardness and Hit Points

Each +1 of enhancement bonus adds 2 to a weapon’s or shield’s hardness and +10 to its hit points.

so total HP = 80 (5d6 isn't going to break it)

Adamantine has a hardness of 20 so total Hardness of the head = 28

However the haft is still wooden and that only has hardness 5 for a total hardness of 13

As disintegrate doesn't say it bypasses hardness then it doesn't (and other magical attacks are affected by hardness).

So if it makes its save it takes 5D6 damage against 13 hardness and 80HP. So you need five disintegrates at least assuming it keeps making its Fort save.

Also note for targeting it is only treated as large:
A weapon’s size category isn’t the same as its size as an object. Instead, a weapon’s size category is keyed to the size of the intended wielder. In general, a light weapon is an object two size categories smaller than the wielder, a one-handed weapon is an object one size category smaller than the wielder, and a two-handed weapon is an object of the same size category as the wielder.

titans do not fail fortitude saves

their con mod is way... way too high for that

Except for 5% of the time.

Well, unless they have Steadfast Determination. Then you're screwed.
