ok i have a question about damage to specific areas. the DMG gives the penalties for damage to specific areas, but what if those areas are rendered completely useless, what would the penalties be then. also it does not say how to attack specific areas, i mean if a fighter wanted to hack off an orc's arm would the orc get a bonus to AC, would the fighter get a penalty to attack, what..... also if you can attack specific areas how much damage do you need to do to destroy that area(hack off an arm, break a bone, etc). And one more thing, could you break someone's bone with a grapple check, and if so would it be another grapple check, a strength check, an unarmed attack, or what.

any input would be helpful, thanks

i would say that each body part gets an AC bonus added on to the base AC based on size for example a medium sized characters arm would be about tiny thus gaining +2 to armor class
if you wanted to get really specific i would say that they only gain the armor bonus from the armor they are wearing if it covers that portion of their body for example a chain shirt does not cover the arms and therfore would not grant the arms any AC
also i was thinking maybe double dex bonus since its easier to move just your arm out of the way than your whole body this is negated when flat footed of course when there is no dex unless they have uncanny dodge

just a couple ideas

I suggest doing a search for "Called Shot". It's essentially the same question you're asking now, and it gets asked about once every two weeks. Some tips might arrive (although you'll probably just get a big, fat no.).

Personally, I suggest not worrying about it at all. It just adds yet another problem to make combat take up even more time.

i use the table from Mongoose Publishings "Quintessential Fighter" for the Master of Pain PrC that is an attack penalty to each area and has a special effect

Head= -8 penalty, target dazed for 1 round per PC's Str bonus

Arm= -6 penalty, -2 circumstance penalty to attack, damage and skill checks with that arm

Leg= -4 penalty, base speed reduced by 10 ft no running/charging, -2 on skill checks requiring legs

Torso= -2 penalty, target winded and -2 to initiative for 1 round per PC's Str bonus

Buy Torn Asunder by Bastion Press. It has the BEST hit locations rules ever written, including "classes" of severity. A minor hit to any given area is less damaging than a severe hit.. for example.

Great stuff.

Amazon.com has it pretty cheap.

AW, RIGHT IN THE NUTS!

As mentioned, Quin. Fighter's called shot rules are a good place to start.

Keep in mind the following facts:

1) In d20, the majority of "hits" are supposed to be mere scratches, - it is not till you hit 0 hit points that actual, real damage is supposed to be done. That is why you get no penalties to combat even if you are at 1 hitpoint left.

2) Any real damage at all to any part of human body would effectively render you disabled. Trust me, unlike the movies, if you lose an eye you will STOP fighting. I.E. Real damage to a single body part is pretty much the same as going to 0 hit points.

3) Almost all such called shot systems are horribly over-powered. That is why D20 went to such lengths to make reasonable called shots systems such as:

Sneak Attacks
Power Attack
Sunder
Trip
Disarm
Hamstring (Sneak attack feat)
Assasin's Death attack
Arterial Strike (Sneak attack feat)
Coup de Grace
Cripping Strike
Monk's stunning attack
....

Note, the above list is just a partial list of official WoTC called shot systems.

They are all FAR better than the crappy third party stuff referenced above. Of course, they are also weaker than the third party stuff and often require the players to actually PAY for the super powerful abilities by taking feats, classes, etc. etc. For this reason some players don't like them.
