| Moon-Lancer02-22-05, 10:21 PM | Damage reduction. how does it work. Could someone explain it to me. I read The dm Guild and I understand it to a point. I need some clarification however. What’s the difference between 10/magic 10/- 10/silver At the moment my understand is saying that All magic penetrates damage reduction, however why would their be a reduction /magic if magic was the basic force that gets through reduction. does +1 weapons get past /- Does magic get past silver damge reduction What about +1 magic swords Is damage reduction for metal types not effected by +1 whatever swords? also i have see stuff like 10/+2 does this mean spells and +2 weapons get past damage reduction? *Edit. Ok I looked at the dm guild agian and i figured some stuff out, but i still have questions. Do all +1 weapons get past all damge reduction? thats how im reading it. Anyway whats the diffrence between /Magic /- |
| Moon-Lancer02-22-05, 10:38 PM | ok as i see it /coldiron and the like ignores damge from +1 and such weapons, but not from cold iron and spells /- Ignores everything but spells (and other things like fire and whatnot) /magic This one is the damge reduction that +1 weapons work agenst. /+2 and up requires a serton enhancemnt value on a magic weapon to get through damage reduction am i right? sorry for the formating. |
| J.B.02-22-05, 11:02 PM | The material preceding the slash (example: 10/silver) represents the material needed to bypass the damage reduction. Magical weapons only bypass DR if it is "10/magical" and the like. Some DR require multiple things to bypass it. For example, "10/magical and silver" requires a weapon that is both magical, and silver to go through it. Damage Reduction that looks like "10/-" means that there isn't anything that can bypass it. Mind you, you shouldn't be seeing "10/+2" Damage Reduction any more. This type of damage reduction has been changed into "10/magic" for each plus in the 3.5 edition. |
| runestar02-23-05, 12:22 AM | But what is the precedent for overcoming these protections? can dr/silver be overcome by magic weapons sch as +1? what about dr/adamantine? What level of enhancement must a weapon be before it can bypass said protecton. Is there some kind of list? |
| Gorey02-23-05, 12:41 AM | No, the point he's trying to make is that the old concept of 10/+2, etc has been replaced in 3.5 by 10/magic. Any +(number) weapon will penetrate /magic. The values /adamantium and such need that specific quality to penetrate- the degree of numerical bonus doesn't matter. That's my take, anyway. |
| d_nychus02-23-05, 01:01 AM | 10/silver means that any non-spell attack that deals damage has 10 points taken off unless it was made by a silver weapon. 10/- means that any non-spell attack that deals damage has 10 points taken off, period. 10/magic means that any non-spell attack that deals damage has 10 points taken off unless it was made by a magic weapon. Magic weapons do not bypass any DR save for magic (unless the magic weapon has some other qualities, like being made of silver as well as being magical). |
| Derren S.02-23-05, 01:35 AM | Damage reduction. how does it work. Could someone explain it to me. I read The dm Guild and I understand it to a point. I need some clarification however. What’s the difference between 10/magic 10/- 10/silver 10/magic = subtract 10 damage unless the weapon is magical (+1 or better) 10/- = subtract 10 damage, no weapon penetrates it. 10/silver = subtract 10 damage unless the weapon is made out of silver. (In 3.0 Magic also bypasses it) At the moment my understand is saying that All magic penetrates damage reduction, however why would their be a reduction /magic if magic was the basic force that gets through reduction. You are wrong. Magical weapons only penetrated /magic DR (And /epic DR when its +6 or higher). Unless they have special enchantments which allow them to bypass other DRs (like Holy) does +1 weapons get past /- No. No weapon gets past /- DR. Does magic get past silver damge reduction What about +1 magic swords In 3.0 Yes. In 3.5 no. Is damage reduction for metal types not effected by +1 whatever swords? In 3.0 magic penetrated all meterial DR. In 3.5 it doesn't. also i have see stuff like 10/+2 does this mean spells and +2 weapons get past damage reduction? +2 or higher. And spells always penetrate DR. But this form of DR only (sadly) exists in 3.0. *Edit. Ok I looked at the dm guild agian and i figured some stuff out, but i still have questions. Do all +1 weapons get past all damge reduction? thats how im reading it. Anyway whats the diffrence between /Magic /- In 3.0 magic goes through all material DR and /magic didn't exist but /+X so for stronger enemies you needed a weapon with a higher +. In 3.5 magic only bypasses /magic nothing else (Except for special enchantments like Holy vs /good DR) In either edition, no weapon penetrates /- DR. |
