Damned charge! vs... Tendriculos? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hmm, on Tuesday one of my parties encounters featured a Tendriculos, one character walked up and cast a spell, provoking an AoO.

The next round, the bard charged at the Tendriculos and I claimed that the Tendriculos made an AoO against the charging bard (with its 40ft tentacle reach, and the tentacle still not being far from the wizard) and this caused a big argument. I ruled that this case caused an AoO (It fumbled the AoO anyway).

Does a charge ever cause an AoO? I ask because he ran through the threatened area, this being the charge at the enemy to strike it with his rapier.

Any tips?

:b: Old question but a good question. Charge by its self does not cause an AoO. The movement through threatened squared will. Your judgement was correct.

Thank you! There seemed to be some kerfuffle about charge never causing AoO because it's 'special'. I said "It's still running through a threatened area" and they said "Well, what about when you run up to people and attack at 5ft? Will you introduce it then?" I said "No, don't be silly."

Thanks for the support. I appreciate it.

Charging a creature is - from an AoO perspective - exactly equivalent to moving up to it and then whacking it. If you leave a threatened square as part of the charge, you provoke an AoO. If you leave a threatened square as part of the move, you provoke an AoO. Charge allows a double move rather than a single one and tweaks AC and to-hit, but it's not special from an AoO perspective (exception: Ride-by Attack).

The Charge Combat Action is listed in the PHB as No AoO. This has cause some confusion among people who interprete it as meaning "If you charge, you're immune to AoOs" when in fact it means that charging a creature does not, by itself, entitle that creature to an AoO. If the creature has Reach, or the Lineholder feat from Complete Warrior, it still gets and AoO, the first because you would have had to move through a threatened square and the second because of its feat.

Note that I had a DM who insisted that, in fact, Charging did provoke an AoO even after I showed him the chart in the PHB that said that Charging did not. This was not a house rule, he kept insisting, it was an official D&D rule he'd read "somewhere" but couldn't remember where, even after I showed him where the official rules directly contradicted him. His "knowledge" of the rules along with his tendancy to play favorites when handing out loot and XP are why I no longer play in his group.
