NeueRegel 03-16-05, 03:03 AM	Hi. :) I dare somebody to ask a real question. A real life, real Dungeons and Dragons question. Any subject. (Okay, I'm in Equipment, so we should stay there). No, "flaming fists". No Katana stuff. No more "I-just-watched-Anime-and-I'm-on-crack-highlander" stuff. Kudos: Favorites: non-magic armor. Sword-cane Sap-scabbard idea. (latter was no good, in my opinion only, as I could brain somebody with mine, irl.) Absolutely forget "can I cast a touch spell with my monk-toe". Doesn't anybody actually read books anymore? (Comic books and Forgotten Realms sh*t does not count). Does anybody "roleplay"? Or is this just a forum for very slow-typing video-gamers? Now, before you judge me, I've made over balanced NPC classes too; I posted the "WeaponsMaster" here, and I took it in stride, that most of you did not like it. Coolies. No worries on that count; I never used it; that's what this board is for, if not this forum and/or thread. Oh, yeah, just remembered; equipment: oops. Oh well, rant over, today. NeueRegel

SilverFoxKnows 03-16-05, 07:45 PM	Okay, I'll take a stab at it. If you were going to outfit yourself for an adventure with stuff you have in your house, what melee "weapons" would you bring? A machete, an axe, a baseball bat? Do you own a sword? And is it the real deal or a decorative wall hanger? Here's my answers. I would take a machete and khukuri (both could serve as tools/weapons) and a gaucho knife (could be carried concealed).
roetroc 03-16-05, 08:19 PM	I'm in on this Being a historical reenactor (and my wife as well) my house is loaded with DnD type weapons. (ie loads of melee stuff and bows but no guns). All things are a trade off. My sallet has limited visibility but excellent protection (when worn with the bevor). My spangenhelm has less protection but I can more easily see (and hear) people trying to outflank me or attack from my sides. My 60# ash longbow is great fun but I'm not yet that great a shot and at longer range it is hard to hit a human sized target whenthey are moving and if they are concentrating on you it's nigh on impossible when they have little bit of distance (it's surprising easy to jump out of the way of an arrow even from 30m away if that is the only person you have to worry about). Weapon wise, whilst the Danish axe is fun, the saex an interesting proposition, the sword is quite good when combined with a shield. Evena buckler can be very effective but not in massed combat. Inmassed combat you really want to have that shield. A spear in two hands give you great reach but you need to work with someone else to get the protection of their shield (and body) but a good team of spearman and shield wielder is tough to beat. On your own the spear can still work but it takes a great deal more skill. Can be done, but you need to be quick. My mail is very nice but needs the padded toabsorb the blows and brigandines are very nice too but still benefit from the padding. To sum up, I would use my bow if I had the chance, keep my shield on my back and use my spear until it was broken or I was left on my own then unsling me shield and bring out a good cut and thrust sword (like a longsword). I would keep the sallet but keep the visor up most of the time, except for when I expect ranged incoming. For armour some nice gothic plate harness but I really feel unless I was really used to it, some well made padded armour over a brig with mail undersleeves. Vambraces would be hugely advantageous as would greaves. In a dungeon (if they were real) I think I would stick to some well made leather simply for ease of movement (think climbing and swimming) but I would still keep the sallet and the weapons also I doubt I would have as much opportunity to use the two handed spear and I would lose the longbow. And and a nice dagger, 'cause you never know.

What I'd take: My crossbow and what bolts I have (you'd be amazed how often I lose these things), My knife (anyone know who Angelsword is? Only one of the BEST darned FORGES IN THE WORLD), cloak, sinew (you'd be amazed the things you can find to do with string), feathers and shafts and points and things (yes, I have craft arrow), and basically all the little things you think you'd ever need for any situation, including alligator wrestling on a glacier.

Thanks those of you that took it in that direction anyway! Was I trolling? Yeah, by some definitions, I was. I'd prefer to couch it as "complaining out-loud" though, and it proved worth it; not only did a few cool real-life posts drop out of the ether, but a bit of humour as well. (Still slightly chuckling aloud @ Beware of Kobold!, and Hypnotic Monk as well; I haven't thought of Douglas Adams in 15 years.) Do I own a sword? Yep. A very well made katana, replica of course. I've owned others as well, but I've sold and traded them. Do I need to get laid? I can't even keep up with my wife; stupid sexual peak rule of nature joke... bleh. I did a short stint with the Society of Creative Anachronisms about 15 years ago, kudos roetroc. Am I "better" than you? Nope. Am I allowed my take on the best game ever invented, and somewhat vengeful in my rhetoric when I see it being assaulted with silliness? Yep.
