| NeueRegel06-13-07, 08:21 AM | Okay, first off, I don't know wtf to post this, because it covers "classes", "weapons&combat", and "feats". Bleh. So this is as good as any... For all of that, it's probably a simple question, and probably discussed before now. I just don't think I've seen it anywhere, but I'm not so conceited as to think that I possibly could be the first person to think of this; I've only been hanging around the boards for a couple of years. Okay, so, (class) a monk can use a quarterstaff in his weapon of flurries. The monk weapons usable in a flurry are intentionally limited to low damage/yield weapons for game balance reasons. This I understand. What I don't understand is that why a higher level monk might get more weapon choices (weapons&combat). In real life, my sensai would not teach me anything with the katana until I'd made black belt, so maybe it's a "level thing". So, that brings me to some other weapons, and one just "begs" to be used by a monk, "just cuz!" That being the evolution of the staff, the double bladed sword. So finally, my real question is, has anyone ever allowed or made a feat (house ruled I assume) (feats) of a higher level monk being allowed to use a double bladed sword in a monk's flurry? Say you know, "BAB + X" or something? By that level, unarmed damage would probably exceed it, but it would be a fun game playing thing, and of course there is "special materials" considerations. Well, that's it. Neue. |
| foxtail06-13-07, 08:26 AM | There's a feat in the Eberron campaign setting, Double Steel Strike, that lets you use a double-bladed sword as a monk weapon, but you need proficiency and Weapon Focus in it first. |
| jaelis06-13-07, 08:59 AM | Also the lajatang in CW has a similar theme, its a 1d8 x2/1d8 x2 double weapon. If you take EWP in it, you can flurry with it. The Eberon CS has feats like that for several other weapons too... the longspear and longsword if I recall. |

| jaelis06-13-07, 09:18 AM | No... it's a monk weapon in the sense you can flurry with it, but it's not one in which a monk is automatically proficient. I'm pretty sure CW was clear that you can't use it nonproficiently in a flurry. (Don't know why you'd ever want to though.) |
| foxtail06-13-07, 09:27 AM | Also the lajatang in CW has a similar theme, its a 1d8 x2/1d8 x2 double weapon. If you take EWP in it, you can flurry with it. So, equal in damage and crit range to a double-bladed sword, and automatically a monk weapon? What good is the DBS at all, then? |
| jaelis06-13-07, 09:30 AM | It's crits are only 20/x2, not 19-20/x2. So the DBS is better. (Sorry I left the "20" out.) |
| foxtail06-13-07, 10:29 AM | Still, with Double Steel Strike having a feat prerequisite, and costing a feat itself, the lajatang is the obviously superior choice for monks, I would think. |
| cthuluspawn06-13-07, 10:57 AM | Still, with Double Steel Strike having a feat prerequisite, and costing a feat itself, the lajatang is the obviously superior choice for monks, I would think. Not to mention that its legal in just about all game settings. Eberon feats/items are usually ruled only legal in Eberon. Some DM's are picky that way. |
| NeueRegel06-13-07, 11:03 AM | I get into trouble with this stuff all the time now, because we still play pure core rules. (3.5) \ I just like to ask, "what's out there", without infringing upon the CoC. But when it comes up, in discussions, with our two groups, it's always interesting to see what has "happened" in the games with all the new books and that. I'm sorta behind the times. Bastards swords are all denigrated, etc. We just play to play, not power-play. We like our characters, not the game. It's more important to us that "his sister was abducted" than it is "he has +1 more with his weapon". We play more in towns/cities/palaces now. After 20 *REAL TIME* years, our characters are a story, not a race for x-box shite. But we still like to test the new stuff in 3.5 We don't change our characters, and the weapons that they have used since about 1986. We adapt to keep up though. Our characters are about 15-20th now. Took that long real time, too. We're not about to give them up. By new people's standards, all this x-box optimizing, we'd be very weak. We play real characters, not anime stuff. So, we play 3.5 rules now, but most of you laugh at me/us. But we have fun, it works, still. Not to say there have been some major overhauls. A player of mine had to take his Ad&d druid/mage totally over to a Mystic Theurge (sp?) to fit it in right with the levels, etc. But yeah, it all works. Oh, wait, I am totally rambling, in the wrong thread, totally off topic, I totally messed up here, lol. Somebody shoot me with an arrow painfully, please. I was multitasking, and was totally in the wrong room (except for the IM), forgive me, I'm just hitting enter anyway. |
| Aryxbez06-14-07, 01:30 AM | Just take Exotic weapon master, that way you can flurry with the double bladed sword, it is in the complete warrior. |
| dengarbountyhunter06-17-07, 02:42 PM | I believe that monks are not automatically proficient with the lajatang, but if they become so (with EWP), they can use it as a monk weapon. |
| Waterhammer06-17-07, 05:46 PM | Not to say there have been some major overhauls. A player of mine had to take his Ad&d druid/mage totally over to a Mystic Theurge (sp?) to fit it in right with the levels, etc. Actualy, Druid/Magic-User was never a legal option in AD&D. House rules can change anything, though. :bored: Of course now, in v.3.5 it is perfectly exceptable to multi-class as a Druid/Wizard if you want to. |
| Darth Sephiroth06-17-07, 08:35 PM | Personally, Darth Maul would probably work better as a Swordsage/Exotic Weapons Master, but that's just me. The lajatang would be interesting, but just wouldn't have the same visual image of a black cloaked figure with two blades of light. |

You gotta be able to nab Adamantine Hurricane from iron heart and be sure to take up Raging Mongoose from Tiger Claw. Also, someone in the psionics forum mentioned that a PsyWar/Dervish has some tasty Darth Maul potential :) |

Incorrect my sadly transitioned 3.5 neophyite! :) Half Elves could be Wizard/Druids in AD&D second eddition. Also, a human could duel class into ANYTHING it's little heart desired, including a Druid/Wizard. :P |
| Steely_Dan06-18-07, 07:32 AM | i remember reading somewhere in ebberon or forgotten realms or something a feat that lets a monk use a lonsword as a monk weapon. Yes, there is an Eberron feat called Whirling Steel Strike that allows a monk to flurry with a longsword. |
| Rykler06-18-07, 04:01 PM | wait, considering that a flurry of blow strikes can start with a massive, maybe slower attack, could a sword be used only for the first attack and then just fast fist and feet for the rest of the attack? |
| foxtail06-18-07, 04:21 PM | wait, considering that a flurry of blow strikes can start with a massive, maybe slower attack, could a sword be used only for the first attack and then just fast fist and feet for the rest of the attack? I don't see why not, as long as the sword is considered a monk weapon for that character. The PHB gives an example on how to do pretty much the same thing with a quarterstaff. |
| forsaken111106-18-07, 06:57 PM | Untapped Potential has the Exotic Mindblade feat which lets you shape your mindblade into one exotic weapon. Choose a double-bladed sword and boom, you have darth maul complete with red glowing double-lightsabre. |
