Shaggy_Shaggs 08-06-06, 07:41 AM	Of course. Darts are purchased individually, rather than by the stack like ammunition tend to be. Magic on them works individually, rather than in stacks like ammunition. There is no mention of them being treated as ammunition for draw purposes, nor for what happens to them after they're thrown. They aren't ammunition, and aren't destroyed by being thrown regardless of whether they hit or miss. (Unless, of course, you do something stupid like throw one into lava or acid.)
Dragonteuthis 08-06-06, 07:41 AM	Given that it is not treated as ammunition, then yes, it should be retrievable, like a throwing axe, spear, or javelin. Note that some circumstances may prevent retrieval. For example, if the target is standing with a lake of lava behind it, and you miss. Or, you chuck your nonmagical dart into, oh, a black pudding. But in general, yes, darts are reusable.

Youi know that when you throw that sucker someone is getting hurt! I hope you have a back up weapon or some darts with the "returning" property though or it could get ugly for you.

Well at 1/2 a pound each I'm thinking that you're probably right. That's a pretty hefty dart! And since they're basically throwing daggers (damage wise) then there you go! As for darts, I don't see a flavor text entry for them in the SRD. I've always wondered if you could use them as melee weapons, but since they're listed under "Ranged" and have no description I don't know. I GUESS I'd probably rule that they would be treated as Javelins, taking a -4 when used in melee since they're probably not meant for that kind of thing. Curious, though.

Lawn darts, used in an outdoor game, have been responsible for the deaths of four children, the latest being in early 1997 near Elkhart, Indiana. It should be noted that the specific incident that caused lawn darts to be made illegal also involved beer. Those things really are dangerous. I want them.

Unfortunately I have to rely on the SRD, since many of my books are in storage at the moment, and this particular resource doesn't have a description of darts. I do, though, seem to remember reading that part about them being "small javelins", so right on. Thanks. :)
