| Slimgauge03-27-08, 11:34 AM | Last night, my party fought a Troglodyte Champion with class levels in Barbarian and Frenzied Berserker (Complete Warrior). The DM uses the critical hit deck of cards. The difficulties that came up with regard to the interaction of certain critical hit results with the "Deathless Frenzy" class feature. The Trog was already well into negative hit points when ... 1) A critical hit result that causes the hit to do triple damage (but makes that damage non-lethal damage (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/injuryandDeath.htm#nonlethalDamage)) came up twice, with the result that we did more than 60 non-lethal damage to it. Does it become Staggered (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/conditionSummary.htm#staggered) ? 2) A critical hit result (severed spine) that causes 3d6 DEX ability damage in addition to the hit point damage came up. I rolled well and did 17 DEX damage while the Trog had a dex of 10. The SRD says "Dexterity 0 means that the character cannot move at all. He stands motionless, rigid, and helpless." Does Deathless Frenzy override this and allow the Trog to keep fighting ? The DM had it ignore both and keep fighting (but it did get a dex mod to AC of -5). Even though it had a dex of 0, it had a tremendous strength so we had difficulty tripping it. It was large and had a two-handed weapon so we had difficulty disarming it. However it did eventually get knocked prone (by a special smite feat) and the DM ruled at that point that it could not rise with a zero dex. |
