The goal: Create a custom magical item that allows the wearer to magically speak one language (common) using spells and psionic powers from the core books and the XPH only. Reasoning: I have a PC unable to speak (A krenshar), and I want to allow him to be able to do so for various reason. The only magic item I can find in the core rulebooks that allows this action is the Belt of Dwarven Kind Belt of Dwarvenkind: This belt gives the wearer a +4 competence bonus on Charisma checks and Charisma-based skill checks as they relate to dealing with dwarves, a +2 competence bonus on similar checks when dealing with gnomes and halflings, and a –2 competence penalty on similar checks when dealing with anyone else. The wearer can understand, speak, and read Dwarven. If the wearer is not a dwarf, he gains 60-foot darkvision, dwarven stonecunning, a +2 enhancement bonus to Constitution, and a +2 resistance bonus on saves against poison, spells, or spell-like effects. Moderate divination; CL 12th; Craft Wondrous Item, tongues, creator must be a dwarf; Price 14,900 gp;Weight 1 lb. I'm not sure what all the various abilities of the belt add up to individually, especially given the stipulations on some of them (bonus to dwarves only, bonus to gnomes/halfings only, bonus if your /not/ a dwarf only, penalty if your not dealing with X, etc) or I would be able to do this myself. Being able to speak dwarven (or common, as I want to eventually do) clearly shouldn't be as expensive as a constant tongues effect which is normally 30,000; the belt itself shows this clearly, it's less than half that cost and has numerous other abilities to boot... so I'm kind of stumped. Anyone have some suggestions/number crunching? |

What you want is an amulet of freedom of speech. From the Wizard's web site: (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20020125a) Amulet of Freedom of Speech (Item) This amulet allows the wearer to verbally communicate despite lacking the physical ability to do so. For example, an awakened animal or plant that could not normally form words can do so while wearing this item. Note that the amulet does not impart any language ability -- the wearer must have something to say. Caster Level: 7th; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item; Market Price: 5,000. |
