yea, I know there is a lot wrong with the title. Anyways, I've seen plenty of pictures and stereotyped images of raptors jumping on the sides of larger animals clawing and biting at them (jurassic park). A recent Discovery channel special on Velociraptor showed that raptor claws/kicks where strong enough to slice em, but could peirce their skin, fat, and muscle no problem; my sis cleverly pointed out they could effectively use them as hooks to stay on a creature in the stereotyped Raptor vs rex scene in jurassic park

this got me thinking (expessially since I have a character, not in use, who is a halfling who lives up to the image of his raptor mount/companion)

now my question is, what is the RAW (if any) on jumping on an opponent (likely of larger size), holding on, and what if the grasping appendages of oneself are natural weapons.

P.S. I know I kinda dictated that what I say is possible(expessially in a fantasy setting) but thats cus Im a rules lawyer going to rehab. Forgive me

Those would go under grappling, if applicable.
Certain creatures (typically on a bite attack) allows checks for grapple.
It would be the closest available mechanic to what you have in mind.

As to whether the creature you have in mind is in the MM, and if it is has this ability, you have to check.

There is a feat in the Complete Warrior called Giantbane. It is a tactical feat and allows you to "climb abord" a creature of two or more size categories larger than you. If you find this feat, it may help you greatly.

Deinoychus vs stegosaurus? That sounds like the most action packed movie of the summer! When's it coming out?

well my character's situation was only what inspired me. I was wondering what it would be to do something like giant's bane but without that feat. like sundering without imp sunder. I know it could be improved, with an aoo, climp checks ect... but I was wanting to first see if there was any RAW on this.

and I feel that normal grappling isn't right for this. the idea of grappling is open ended, but I feel the situations are a bit to different

hmm... this is a predicament.

I think a grapple check would need to be made, but not in effort of pinning. Use a climb check and somehow mix it in with your grapple check, maybe something can be devised as such.

Or you could give the Deinoychus the Attach SA (see the Dire Weasal entry in the MM) on a Charge.

:shifty:
...anyone else hear a weird creaking sound ? ...I think it's the game system groaning under the strain of trying to deal with a troublesome, unexpected, but altogether too sensible new thing...
