| orbrover02-21-06, 06:34 PM | Hello Friends, Is there a comprehensive (or partial) list of when an NPC or PC should be denied their Dex bonus to AC? Where would one find this list? If you don't know of a list, please post circumstances that you know of here. Thank you. t |
| zelf_gale02-21-06, 08:21 PM | Sleeping Helpless |
| Borris02-21-06, 08:31 PM | Sleeping Unconscious (dying or stable) Flat-footed Blinded (or attacked by an invisible opponent) Paralyzed Stunned Grappling (only against opponents outside the grapple) Feinted (against feinter only) Climbing Balancing |
| yuenglingdragon02-21-06, 08:44 PM | It should be noted that when an opponent is helpless they not only lose their dex bonus to ac but it is treated as effectively 0 and they recieve a -5 dex penalty to AC |
| Zherog02-21-06, 08:58 PM | Climbing Unless they have a listed climb speed, or some other ability. Balancing Only if they have less than 5 ranks in Balance. |
| clannagh02-21-06, 08:59 PM | most of it is listed in the table "Armor Class Modifiers" in the combat section of the players guide |
| draconic_swine02-21-06, 11:52 PM | A quick scan over the previous posts seems to show most of them. For the table clannagh refers to, check this (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatModifiers.htm) out. |
| FLAvatar02-22-06, 02:33 AM | also jumping to mind are: Running (without the Run feat) Swimming and failing a Swim check |
| draconic_swine02-22-06, 10:53 AM | Actually, the SRD shows nothing under the swim skill about losing your dexterity modifier. SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/swim.htm). |
| Father Dale02-23-06, 08:19 AM | Very comprehensive list. Keep in mind the following. If a character has uncanny dodge, then hes not denied his Dex by being flatfooted. (he's still flatfooted, he just retains his dex.) This includes attacks by invisible opponenets and hidden opponenets, or if the character is blinded. (i.e. an invisible attacker still gets a +2 to hit, but the defender retains his Dex against the attack.) If a character has the Blind-Fight feat, he also retains his Dex against invisible and hidden attackers. Additionally, such attackers do not get the +2 to hit against a character with Blind-fight. A character with the Run feat retains his Dex while running. Helpless characters are denied their Dex, as well as having effective Dex and Str scores of 0, meaning that you would subtract the targets Dex mod plus an additional -5 to their AC. Further, melee attacks against a helpless character get a +4 on the attack roll (ranged attacks get no bonus against a helpless character.) |
| Zherog02-23-06, 10:33 AM | Helpless characters are denied their Dex, as well as having effective Dex and Str scores of 0, meaning that you would subtract the targets Dex mod plus an additional -5 to their AC. Further, melee attacks against a helpless character get a +4 on the attack roll (ranged attacks get no bonus against a helpless character.) You're correct on everything in your post except the the effective Strength score being 0. Helpless: A helpless character is paralyzed, held, bound, sleeping, unconscious, or otherwise completely at an opponent’s mercy. A helpless target is treated as having a Dexterity of 0 (–5 modifier). Melee attacks against a helpless target get a +4 bonus (equivalent to attacking a prone target). Ranged attacks gets no special bonus against helpless targets. Rogues can sneak attack helpless targets. As a full-round action, an enemy can use a melee weapon to deliver a coup de grace to a helpless foe. An enemy can also use a bow or crossbow, provided he is adjacent to the target. The attacker automatically hits and scores a critical hit. (A rogue also gets her sneak attack damage bonus against a helpless foe when delivering a coup de grace.) If the defender survives, he must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + damage dealt) or die. Delivering a coup de grace provokes attacks of opportunity. Creatures that are immune to critical hits do not take critical damage, nor do they need to make Fortitude saves to avoid being killed by a coup de grace. |
| clannagh02-23-06, 04:58 PM | the interesting one that does NOT come up is "attacker hidden" |
