| JabberWocky10-05-04, 04:26 PM | Recently a friend of mine went back and forth with me on the cost for amor for a half-ogre character. Since they're of unusual body size or shape, half-ogres must pay twice the listed cost for armor. This we both agree on, as it's in the book. I was in a hurry and couldn't look through the entire PHB, and I certainly don't know every page of it by heart, but he insisted that the cost of masterwork armor (+150gp) is added in after you double the cost of the armor. He's played more Large characters than I have, so he may be right, but I just wanted to clarify. Do you add in the cost of masterwork armor before or after you double its price for Large characters? |

Such a well-made item functions like the normal version, except that its armor check penalty is lessened by 1. A masterwork suit of armor or shield costs an extra 150 gp over and above the normal cost for that type of armor or shield. The masterwork quality of a suit of armor or shield never provides a bonus on attack or damage rolls, even if the armor or shield is used as a weapon. All magic armors and shields are automatically considered to be of masterwork quality. You can’t add the masterwork quality to armor or a shield after it is created; it must be crafted as a masterwork item. ARMOR FOR UNUSUAL CREATURES Armor and shields for unusually big creatures, unusually little creatures, and nonhumanoid creatures have different costs and weights from those given on Table: Armor and Shields. Refer to the appropriate line on the table below and apply the multipliers to cost and weight for the armor type in question. Humanoid ........................................ .....Nonhumanoid Size .....................Cost .......Weight..... Cost........ Weight Tiny or smaller1 .....x1/2 .........x1/10....... x1 ..........x1/10 Small .....................x1.......... x1/2......... x2 ..........x1/2 Medium ..................x1............ x1.......... x2 ..........x1 Large .....................x2............ x2......... x4............x2 Huge ......................x4............ x5......... x8........... x5 Gargantuan .............x8............. x8........ x16.......... x8 Colossal .................x16........... x12....... x32.......... x12 1 Divide armor bonus by 2. these multipliers are applied after the addition of the cost for masterworking as they apply to the normal cost for ordinary armor,so you add the cost for masterwork before you double its cost. |
| BW022210-05-04, 06:03 PM | carnivore, >normal cost The normal cost of a suit of large-sized chainshirt is 200gp. A ogre smith doesn't make two suits of chainmail and then paste them together. A human smith doesn't make four suits of leather and then turn them into one suit of barding. Magical armor is a straight +1000gp. Regardless of the weight or cost. A suit of +1 chainmail barding is say 150gp (chain mail) * 4 (large non-humaniod) + 150gp (masterwork) + 1000gp (+1). You don't add the cost of a masterwork twice for large sized weapons, nor do you add a fraction of the cost to small sized weapons. A masterwork dagger is 302gp, a masterwork greatsword is 350gp. Masterwork is a determination of the quality of the crafting, not it's size, weight, etc. If an ogre (or anyone) can make a suit of ogre-sized chainmail for 300gp, he can make a suit of ogre-sized masterwork chainmail for an extra 150gp (his time an skill). It doesn't take him twice as long to make the armor (it doesn't have twice as many links, just larger ones), it's the same amount of work as a smaller suit - folds, crimps, forging, etc. It just uses more materials (hence the 2x base price). On the flip side, a pixie smith can make a suit of chainmail for 75gp. Making it masterwork is still 150gp, not 75gp. You are paying for her time, not anymore materials, and it has the same number of links to create. It is no less (or more) work for the pixie to make it masterwork than a human making a suit of normal-sized masterwork chainmail. |

There is a relavant section in the craft skill. Creating Masterwork Items: You can make a masterwork item—a weapon, suit of armor, shield, or tool that conveys a bonus on its use through its exceptional craftsmanship, not through being magical. To create a masterwork item, you create the masterwork component as if it were a separate item in addition to the standard item. The masterwork component has its own price (300 gp for a weapon or 150 gp for a suit of armor or a shield) and a Craft DC of 20. Once both the standard component and the masterwork component are completed, the masterwork item is finished. Note: The cost you pay for the masterwork component is one-third of the given amount, just as it is for the cost in raw materials. ARMOR FOR UNUSUAL CREATURES Armor and shields for unusually big creatures, unusually little creatures, and nonhumanoid creatures have different costs and weights from those given on Table: Armor and Shields. Refer to the appropriate line on the table below and apply the multipliers to cost and weight for the armor type in question. ............................Humanoid.... .....Nonhumanoid Size...................Cost....Weight... ..Cost....Weight Tiny or smaller1....x1/2....x1/10........x1.......x1/10 Small..................x1.......x1/2.........x2........x1/2 Medium...............x1.......x1........ ....x2........x1 Large..................x2.......x2...... .....x4........x2 Huge..................x4.......x5....... .....x8........x5 Gargantuan.........x8.......x8.......... ..x16.......x8 Colossal..............x16.....x12....... ....x32......x12 1 Divide armor bonus by 2. The table above, states to multiply the factors by the values in the armor and shields table. It says nothing about multiplying these factors times the cost of the masterwork component (which from the skills entry is created and priced as a seperate item, at the time of creation). |
