Dexterity bonus to AC against an opponent you cannot see [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi,

There rules don't seem entirely clear on this. Do you keep your dexterity bonus to AC against attacks you cannot see coming?

For example, assume your opponent is hiding behind a Fog Cloud and it has Blindsight. You can't see it but it can see you. Do you retain your dexterity bonus to AC against its attacks?

The only hint on this I have found is in the rules compendium at hiding. It says that you can sneak up on an opponent that isn't aware of you and that your opponent is considered flat-footed. On the other hand, it does not say that whether you can do it with a ranged weapon or not.

I have an example of this working on page 44 of Cormyr, the tearing of the weave but I'm not sure whether the author took his dreams for reality or if it actually worked.

Thanks,

Invisible opponents are treated as if you are blind. So you don't keep your Dex bonus to AC, I'm quite sure it's explictly stated several times.

I'd say it doesn't matter if someone shoots you in the back or stabs you in it, but that's just me.

Let me get this straight then,

Obscuring Mist + Dragon Sight = sneak attack for arcane trickster?

Also: An invisible creature gains a +2 bonus on attack rolls against sighted opponents, and ignores its opponents’ Dexterity bonuses to AC (if any).

There are a couple ways to keep your DEX modifier when fighting an invisible opponent. The most common is Uncanny Dodge. The other is the Blind-Fight feat which only helps against melee attacks from opponents you can't see.
