Yes, I know this has come up often, but I wanted to post an idea and see what others might think of it. Instead of Strength, you use Dexterity to see your attack bonus with all weapons, but you use the armor as Damage Reduction variant from Unearthed Arcana, thus showing how strength is used to hit, by having Strength needed to get through the Damage Reduction provided. Sound fair, or not? If not, any ideas how to improve?

I've thought that for years, but it's a game balance issue. Each stat can have only so many things associated with it:

Str: melee hit & damage
Dex: ranged hit & AC & Reflex
Con: HPs & Fort
Int: spellcasting & skill points
Wis: spellcasting & Will
Cha: spellcasting & a lot of skills

So what you're proposing is to move melee attacks to Dex, which is already too heavy. By adding DR, you emphasize Str for power, but Dex still now has four different stats associated with it.

Sounds familiar.

In case you'de like another slant....

All 3 physical attributes each have 2 very important roles:

Dex -- AC and Ref Save
Con -- HP and Fort Save
Str -- Attack and Damage

The 3 non-physical attributes each have 1 very important role:

Wis -- Will Save
Int -- Skill Points
Cha -- uhhh, er, well.... What the hell is Charisma for?

There is a moderately detailed thread on this on page 2 of equipment and combat.
