| jukar08-07-05, 05:38 PM | My brother swears up and down that there is a magic item called the Dice Earrings, which allow it's wearer to reroll any roll once per day, as with the Lucky ability. However, I have yet to find them in any of the books I own. Do they actually exist, and if so, where can I find them? He wants to buy a set for his character, and I could just let him buy a lucky weapon, but he would rather have the earrings. Also, what body slot do earrings occupy? If it's in a book, just tell me and I'll find it, but from memory I can't recall if there is even a slot for earrings. |

Sorry I don't know about the Dice Earrings. If the lucky ability has a standard price, they'd cost double as slotless. It could, being slotless, be one earring, but two could be used for fashion, flavor, or security. |

Lucky (or fortunate as it was called in 3e, I believe) has the same cost as a +1 bonus, so I'll probably just make a slotless magic item that only works if he has both earrings on at once in order to be effective. That way he'll get what he wants and I don't need to go out and pour through X amount of books until I find it. |

| MystErikEry08-08-05, 12:36 AM | Dice have always had the connotation of luck, as the whole thing with dice is chance. Coins would likely have the same effect. What else, though? I don't know what else could possibly work. Very small spinners? Haha. Dice are most appropriate, regardless of whether it's breaking the fourth wall a little. |

Dice are ubiquitious and by nature associated with games of chance, therefor are perfect for a lucky object. The correlation is luck, as it is grants the wearer the Lucky ability. The reroll aspect is merely crunch, and the PC wouldn't be aware of it's effects anymore than they are aware that Mage Armor gives them a +4 to AC. |
| High Octane08-08-05, 10:00 AM | They ARE aware that mage armor gives +4 to AC! They dont know it as +4 to AC, but Mage armor is a tangible force deflecting blows. Would the character know when the earrings take effect? No. Would they know their luck is helped overall by wearing them? Yes. |

Yes. They have no idea what +4 to AC means, and therein was my point. Obviously they are aware it helps protect them, as they would be aware the lucky ability seems to bring them good fortune. |
| High Octane08-08-05, 10:24 AM | Well you said "PC wouldn't be aware of it's effects", so I got the wrong idea sorry. |
| jukar08-08-05, 10:34 AM | Well you said "PC wouldn't be aware of it's effects", so I got the wrong idea sorry. Hmmm, yeah, I suppose I could have worded it better, upon reading it again. I merely meant that a player is aware of any mechanical aspects a spell or magic item possesses, whereas the PC is merely aware of the in-game translation of that effect. It's by the same principle that a PC can have a weapon magically enhanced. He can ask to make his weapon more powerful, but that doesn't mean he has any idea what a +1 enhancement bonus is (although I've had my share of players walk into a magic shop and ask for one  ) |
| Nom08-08-05, 11:05 PM | What else, though? I don't know what else could possibly work.Rabbits' feet, horseshoes, "relics", ... The in-game concept is "lucky", not "reroll". Thus my point about the fourth wall. The fact that "lucky" is modelled as a reroll is not part of the PCs' world but only of the players'. |
