Item: Cloak of Dimension Door
1 use per day
CL 7th, spell level 4.

Base price would be that of a use-activated item (I think), so 7 x 4 x 2000 or 56,000.

Adjust for one use per day: 5 divided by 1 is 5, and 56000 divided by 5 is 11200.

So the final price is 11,200 gp. Am I right?

I'd go with a command word item for a 10% savings on it.

However, remember that item pricing guidelines are guidelines, not rules. An item may easily turn out to be more or less powerful than these simple guidelines predict, and should be priced accordingly. Fortunately, in this case it has already been done: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#capeoftheMountebank
As normal, just because it appears in the DMG does not mean its balanced, but it means a reasonable amount of effort was put into it.

Cloak of Dimension Door? I believe that's called a cloak of the mountebank. Here, I made a stick with a false flame that sheds light, I'll call it a neverburning torch. It costs 100gp.

Does my sarcasm make any sense to you? If not, here's me coming right out with it. Don't make new stuff that already exists. It's pretty silly.

Oh come one grove, don't be hating.
At least he put some effort into this, he actually calculated it and actually came pretty close to something existing.
We don't all memorise the DMG, MIC and various splatbooks.
...
Well some of us don't.

Thanks for the above guys, that cape will work fine. Obviously I didn't realise it was already an item.

Question though, why does that Cape of the Mountebank cost so much less than the math I worked out? Did I do something wrong, is it calculated differently, or ????

I'm especially confused since the Cape of the Mountebank uses a higher caster level (9th) and still ends up cheaper.

why does that Cape of the Mountebank cost so much less than the math I worked out?The "Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values" section in the DMG contains rough guidelines only. It is not balanced for all circumstances.

The "Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values" section in the DMG contains rough guidelines only. It is not balanced for all circumstances.

More accurately, it's never even close in any circumstance.

You did the base math right, the reason your so off is that they now heavily weigh an item versus it reasonable use meaning that a less useable item is worth less.

Its very hard to know what is right, I sudgest getting the MIC it has a much more reasonable priceing structer and many different kinds of prices + new items.

Items that are only worth while for a mid to low level character dont deserve being priced so high you can not get one till level 18-20 past it's usefullness.

If you use command-word activation rather than use-activation, then the Cape of the Mountebank is priced precisely according to the DMG guidelines.

Thanks for the input guys. Designing and pricing my own items is the part of DMing I'm newest at.
