| kilos12-20-04, 01:43 AM | Can someone give me the rundown of AC and an example place it comes from? For example: Natural armor: from your races natural armor, a spell(barkskin), or amulet of natural armour. Thank you for your concern and cooperation in this matter. |
| TheDragonmaster12-20-04, 02:31 AM | Dexterity - Dexterity modifier, limited by armor Size - Varies with size Armor - Armor Armor (Enchantment) - Magical armor, bracers of armor, Mage Armor Shield - Shields Shield (Enchantment) - Magical shields, Shield Natural Armor - Racial adjustment, templates, Dragon Diciple Natural Armor (Enchantment) - Amulet of natural armor, Barkskin Deflection - Ring of protection Luck - Stone of good luck Insight - Some Ioun stone, don't know which. Sacred - Some classes Profane - Some classes Dodge - Monk, Dwarven defender - This one stacks with itself. Circumstance - Being prone, squeezing - This one stacks with itself. In effect, you can make magic items with whatever bonus you want, as stated in the DMG (preferably not circumstance). |

An Armor bonus is an Armor bonus whether provided by a chain shirt, Full Plate, or the Mage Armor spell. There is no difference in the two other than the source of the bonus. Example, a suit of +1 chainmail has a +5 armor bonus (from the suit itself) and a +1 enhancement bonus. Enhancement bonuses stack on top of Armor, Shield, and Natural armor bonuses. A Shield bonus is a Shield bonus whether provided by a Heavy steel shield, the Shield spell, or the Two Weapon Defense Feat. A creatures Natural armor (from race) can be enhanced by certain spells and magic items. For example a Kobold (+1 natural armor due to race) can wear an Amulet of natural armor +1 to +5 and it'll stack as the "pluses" are enhancement bonuses. Circumstance bonuses. They stack, but must come from different sources. Best example is Aid another. A few you've missed: Cover Haste Remember to use the term enhancement... not enchantment. It helps to avoid confusion. |
| TheDragonmaster12-20-04, 04:59 AM | I'm sorry, primemover003, but I often mix those two words together. And about "forgetting", I was in quite a hurry. My archer characters often use various magical items for the body slots: Armor - Bondleaf Wrap (AaEG) Shield - Bracers of Shielding (Homebrew) Natural Armor - Vestment of Natural Armor (The idea gotten from ELH) Deflection - Ring of Protection Luck - Amulet of Good Luck (Homebrew) Insight - Headband of Foresight (Homebrew) Sacred - Ring of Divinity (Homebrew) Dodge - Boots of Haste and Speed (Striding + Haste ) |

There is no difference in the two other than the source of the bonus. Example, a suit of +1 chainmail has a +5 armor bonus (from the suit itself) and a +1 enhancement bonus. Enhancement bonuses stack on top of Armor, Shield, and Natural armor bonuses. To nit-pick the nit-pick, an enhancement bonus enhances something. In the case of a suit of +1 chainmail, the chainmail provides a total armour bonus of +6. +5 of the bonus is the chainmail itself and the final +1 is magic, but from the point of view of the user it's a +6 armour bonus. Why is this important? If someone cast mage armour on the chainmail wearer, their (normal) armour bonus would remain at +6. The enhancement on the chainmail only improves the bonus provided by the chainmail; it does not transfer to other armour bonuses in any way, form or manner. Likewise, casting magic vestment at level 8 on the chainmail provides a +2 enhancement bonus to the chainmail. Since it already has a +1, the total armour bonus provided by the chainmail rises from +6 to +7. As an aside, the bonus from haste is a +1 dodge bonus. Also, you can fairly safely treat Dex bonuses as dodge bonuses. Although they are technically different, I cannot think of a situation where you can apply a Dex bonus but not a dodge bonus, or vice versa. |

There is no difference in the two other than the source of the bonus. Actually there's a little difference. From the SRD: Unlike mundane armor, mage armor entails no armor check penalty, arcane spell failure chance, or speed reduction. Since mage armor is made of force, incorporeal creatures can’t bypass it the way they do normal armor |

Although they are technically different, I cannot think of a situation where you can apply a Dex bonus but not a dodge bonus, or vice versa. How about when you are wearing armor with a maximum dexterity modifier, say you have dex 12 (+1) and are wearing a half-plate (max dex 0), that way you don't get to apply your dexterity bonus, but you can apply any dodge bonuses that apply. |

The rest doesn't matter when we're talking about the source or name of the bonus in question. Obviously the Enhancment bonus enhances something... it's the suit of armor. No duh! But what I said wasn't wrong. I just didn't extrapolate on it. |

| Aracor12-20-04, 04:44 PM | It's unnamed, which means it happily stacks with any other bonus type. ~Aracor |

I only pointed out that there's a difference, a difference regarding the AC after all. |
| sapperland12-20-04, 11:36 PM | If you have a ring of protection +2, will the spell "protection from evil" stack another +2 on your A/C vs evil? Or are these protection considered the same type and therefore not stackable? What will sheild of faith spell not stack with? |

Just read the descriptions, if I'm not mistaken, all of these are deflection bonuses, and those don't stack. Thus, only the highest modifier is in effect at any time. |
| Greyman12-21-04, 07:59 AM | Related Question: What kind of bonus is the Monks Wisdom modifier to AC counted as? Insight? No, it's just a Wisdom modifier to AC, and is treated the same as a Dexterity modifier to AC. It is fully stackable with every other modifier to AC. |
