My problem is that I can’t pick one weapon. I like all sorts of weapons; I have great difficulty choosing just one. Therefore I put forth this post in hopes of someone with a suggestion on perhaps a class/ prestige/feat/ weapons, that might aid me in my quest for the glory of battle. :banghead: :rimshot: :fight!: :fight!: :fight!:

Who needs to pick? Unless you're a Fighter, the only weapon-specific feat you'll likely bother with is Weapon Focus. That's only +1 to hit. I'd rather maintain flexibility, get another feat, and then when I find a +4 shortsword, I won't feel like I should keep using my +2 scimitar "just because".

On what level are you having trouble picking one? are you trying to find the "best" weapon? Are you trying to find one that does a certain thing or has certain properties? or is it simply a matter of thematics and can't find one that suits your character's personality/lifestyle?

Go with what feels good for your character as a signature weapon, but don't forget that you can use other weapons as the situation demands.

You should have at least one melee weapon and one ranged in general, and if you're a primary combatant, bring along melee weapons of multiple damage types in case you run up against damage reduction.

If you have a high strength, maybe you could even play your indecision as a character theme, you carry several weapons because you never know when you'll run into a foe who requires a new weapon to defeat him.

More info about what you're going for might help.

As long as you're carrying a variety of weapons, you can also have them in a variety of materials and enchantments, too, which will further help you in overcoming DR.

Here's my advice... work your character up to a martial expert.

Start him with a few choice weapons to get the job done:

Long Sword that he wears on his hip at all times, good for slashing, stabbing, and buttering very big pieces of bread.

Heavy Picks x2 that he wears just under his arms, needs two weapon fighting, good for picking (hah hah) your way through a horde of orcs or other humanoid creatures.

Morning STar or Flail for some heavy duty skull smashing.

This should give you a good variety to start with, and if your DM is allowing, maybe you could have a porter who carries your unused weapons (unless you have no problem carrying them yourself.)

THEN!

Get a war horse, baby!

Keep a variety of weapons strapped to your charger, like polearms, crossbow, short sword, some daggers, a whip, spears, whatever! Start a collection!

Then, make it your character's behavior that before any fight or before any dungeon, he assesses the fight at hand and takes the weapons he thinks he'll need...

"Hrmmm... tight narrow corridors... where are my kukri, and hrmmmm... my small throwing axes incase I get the jump on someone."

Any good character should have their primary, secondary, a few hidden weapons, and then emergency backup.

It doesn't matter the class either- unlike 2nd Ed, each class is automatically profiecient in several weapons to begin with. So carry several weapons.

At the very least, I think every character should carry 2 daggers just in case. They can't always be seen, and they're good for quick use, even out of battle.

Every character should carry a dagger, it's one of the only ways to escape if you've been swallowed whole.

What I do, first off, is pick what crit ratio I want.

20 x2 (most simple)
19-20 x2 (most swords)
20 x3 (hammers and axes)
20 x4 (picks and scythes)
18-20 x2 (scim and rapier)

Of course, there are other weapons in those groups, but thos are the biggies.

Personnally, I stick with the 19-20 x2 or the 20x4 almost always. I just like the slightly higher average output of the 19-20, or the massive crits of the 20 x4.

Good luck.

I personally love the rapier. 18-20/X2, finesseable, not to mention being the perfect weapon for showing off swordsmanship in roleplaying encounters. One time, while dming a 1st level party, I threw in a battle of 15 orcs to see how the PC's would handle it. The fighter pulled out a rapier, showed it off, and chuckled. Orcs have never ran faster.

I am not looking for the best weapon just advice on choosing weapons because it is kind of doubtful that i can carry them all.

Masterwork Lance - for those mounted charge attacks.

+1 Composite Longbow - for shooting things that you don't want to get close to (ghosts, spectres, things with Will save gaze weapons, etc.)

Masterwork Armor spikes - for AoOs when using a lance or bow.

+1 Ghost Touch adamantine Longsword - for chopping through walls, ghosts, spectres, golems, constructs.

Masterwork Maul (Complete Warrior) - for stacking Spikes and Brambles.

+1 Adamantine Iron Morningstar - for liches, etc.

Cold Iron Morningstar - for demons, etc.

Get a Greater Magic Weapon if you want a bigger bonus.

Get Oil of Bless Weapon to penetrate DR/X and Good.

Right, like many people have said, pick a primary weapon, and make it at least +1...getting it cold iron or adamantine first would be great, too, but can get pricy.

You should carry a sturdy mace or hammer, or even a staff, for bludgeoning, if your primary is slash or pierce...usually. My guy has a MASSIVE strength, about a 32 from ECL, high starting stat and level up points; ergo, the DR 10/blunt doesn't mean too much to me. I would rather have 10 damage taken off of my 3d6+18 (+1d6 shocking) than wasting the possiblity of a full attack by having to draw a new weapon.

2 daggers, 1 hidden, if possible, and a ranged weapon. Either go the best bow you can if you plan on more than a round or two at range, or a Heavy Xbow if you plan to shoot and then charge (perfect for heavily armored/mounted people!)

Granted, ask 300 people an indeal setup, and you'll probably get 299 answers.

Are there any weapons you like in particular, or weapons that you don't like? How much money do you have to spend on weapons? I'm about to start playing my first fighter character ever, and I'm using a composite longbow and a greatsword +2. Using quickdraw enables the character to switch between them instantaneously as the situation calls for, and using Greater weapon focus and greater weapon specialization makes using the sword, well bad arse. Also, having point blank shot then getting precise shot is highly recommended if there's a possibility that friends may be in the middle of crossfire.

Weapons I dont like...hmmmm. punching daggers, shuriken, unarmed stike, club, darts, sling, nunchaku, siangham ,whip.... there are probably more and I would post them however I do not have all the source books I would want. other than that I like most other weapons.

A good question is...what race/class/level are you now and what level do you see the campaign progressing too?

For multi-weapon characters, I like to pick up Two-Weapon Fighting (lower those penalties), Point blank shot (+1 atk/dam on all ranged attacks), and quickdraw (pull any weapon all the time).

And a 1st level fighter can accomplish this at...1st-2nd level! No messy specific weapon feats. Plenty of variety...and wait until you get some masterwork weapons...those +1's will start stacking nicely.

Using quickdraw enables the character to switch between them instantaneously as the situation calls for.

remember that when you use quick draw to go from your bow to your other weapon you either need to have a 1 handed weapon or light weapon, otherwise you will have to drop the bow. it is a standard action to resheathe a weapon.

otherwise, im a big fan of the exotic weapons (i always have to sell the stuff we find to get a new weapon, but thats ok). things like the spiked chian, dire pick, and the jovar are simply amazing.

I had a fighter once who I decked out in all kinds of weapons.

While walking, he held a spear (although used as walking stick) and shield.
Primary weapon was a longsword on his right hip.
Secondary weapon was a battle axe on his back.
Tertiary weapon was a morning star on his left hip.
He then had 2 daggers on each of his upper arms, 1 dagger on each of his calves, 2 daggers in his belt towards his back, and 1 dagger on his left thigh.

I always had a weapon to use.

i cannot stress the importance of daggers enough. their cheap, small, and have a 10 foot range. hide one or two under your clothes when you go out on the town, get boot and wrist sheathes for them. get a knife vest, and quickdraw and youve got a continuous stream going into some monster. the options are endless. also, a heavy cross bow is a good weapon to have out when exploring, 1d10 damage, then quickdraw a greatsword for 2d6 dammage when it comes into your threat range.

What KIND of character is this? Besides "Fighter." Is he a mercenary from the Northlands, a gleaming Knight out of the Westermarck? What? Your characterization should determine what type(s) of weapon your character will utilize.

I am not shure of what your question is exactly so I will try to answer as best I can.

Dangaard wanders the land to test and acquire new weapons be they melee or ranged. Dangaard has a reverance for weapons on par with a paladin with his deity. however this does not preclude him using weapons, he relishes a good fight. he chooses weapons for every fight acording to the tactical advantages of each weapon.

Race: Human
Class: Fighter5/ Master of arms3
Alignment: N/G

Feats: Improved disarm, Improved trip, Combat reflexes, Quick draw, two weapon fighting, point blank shot, far shot, power attack, improved shield bash.

My idea is to have 2 hidden daggers at all times, one hidden somewhere in your upper body and the other in one of your boots. Use the one in your upper body if your ever disarmed and have nothing else to use. Use the one in your boot if your hog tied or is the closest weapon.

As a primary weapon I suggest using a morning star because you need BOTH DR/ Bludgeoning and Piercing for DR to be usefull i belive. If im wrong on the DR I suggest a longsword. Also use a spiked sheid just in case for those emergency moments. A composite longbow made for your str bonus would also be helpful. For a reach weapon try a guisarme due to your improved trip feat.

Okay, so basically you're going with a weapon master type character.

He's a master of weaponry, right? He studies every weapon he can get his hands on - he knows the capabilities of the different weapons he's proficient with?

In that case, he should carry a realistic assortment of weaponry based on what he expects to encounter. He'll want a sword of some type, first and foremost. It's such a utilitarian weapon that no weapon master worth his weight in fly-dung would choose not to have one.

Then he needs a plate-killer weapon, for those types he's out-armoured. This can be any weapon you feel is appropriate for attacking a foe in armour - such as a battle-axe, or a heavy pick. Or even better - a heavy mace.

Next, he needs a lance, for the all important mounted charge, should he ever need to take up a cavalry position.

And of course, he should, like any good warrior, keep a dagger or two on his person. No more though. Characters that carry around a ludicrous amount of daggers, unless they're assassins or thieves, just seem really stupid and flavourless ("I carry a bunch of daggers, because they're cheap and good in a pinch"). No warrior would bother encumbering himself with a ludicrous amount of daggers - especially since he should assume he's good enough with his other weapons that he will rarely be in a position where a dagger is necessary.

And a ranged weapon (with better range than a dagger) might be nice. A crossbow is a good choice for this. You can keep it readied - then get off a shot before joining melee. Or keep the crossbow in reserve for when you can't reach your foe.

And a shield for when you need that little bit more AC.

So what does it boil down to?

Get a mount, so you can more easily carry all this stuff.
A Lance
A Heavy Mace
A Longsword or Bastard Sword (EWP)
Two Daggers
A Shield

Not too much. The lance and the mace can stay on your mount when you're not needing them right away.. and you can sling your shield onto your back for TWF or THFing.

Why exactly do you guys like carrying daggers?

If you're grappled, swallowed whole, etc., just use unarmed strike. The damage is slightly less (1d3 20/x2 instead of 1d4 19-20/x2), but you don't have to waste time drawing a weapon and you don't have to drop whatever you're holding to make an unarmed strike.

When I mention that, I've heard people gasp, "But an unarmed strike would provoke an AoO!" If you're grappled (swallowed, etc.), the creature grappling you can't take an AoO on you.

Because if you have quick-draw, then drawing a weapon is a free action anyway. It deals more damage, Crits better, and you can throw it.

None of that can be said about your average Fighter or Wizard's fist.

Depends on your DM. What if, for example, you're still technically in the creature's mouth? A DM could rule that making an unarmed strike would provoke an AoO - the creature biting down harder, for example.

I agree with both the dagger and crossbow issues.

I also strongly recommend polearms. I don't care who you are, you can always use a polearm. They're just so awesome. You can have a polearm for nearly every instance. They cover all damage and crit types; they are both reach and nonreach, and some can even be thrown! Polearms weren't THE weapon choice of the Middle Ages for nothing. Check out the May issue of dragon (#331, I believe). It has a veritable bazaar of beautiful polearms. Seriously, do it.
