| FitzNighteyes09-23-04, 01:47 PM | The SRD says: Step 2: Opposed Rolls. You and the defender make opposed attack rolls with your respective weapons. The wielder of a two-handed weapon on a disarm attempt gets a +4 bonus on this roll, and the wielder of a light weapon takes a –4 penalty. (An unarmed strike is considered a light weapon, so you always take a penalty when trying to disarm an opponent by using an unarmed strike.) If the combatants are of different sizes, the larger combatant gets a bonus on the attack roll of +4 per difference in size category. If the targeted item isn’t a melee weapon, the defender takes a –4 penalty on the roll.So the person with the wand or potion makes an opposed attack roll at -4, typically BAB+Str-4 since you are unlikely to have too many things that mod your melee attack with either. |

OK, that was kinda what I was thinking but then I wondered if the -4 was the "weapon improvisation penalty" or if I should add an additional penalty because the Wand/Item isn't a weapon thus not proficient with it kinda thing. Thanks! |
| FitzNighteyes09-23-04, 04:47 PM | Good question. It's kind of wierd if you add the non-proficiency for melee weapon, and the non-proficiency for a ranged weapon in addition to the -4 for not being a melee weapon, and only use the -4 for not being a melee weapon for a wand. I'd say it's a similar rule. If you aren't proficient with a melee weapon, you take -4 to your opposed roll. If it isn't a melee weapon, you take -4 to your opposed roll. Possibly even for the same "reasons". |

| dorpond09-24-04, 07:40 AM | What if I wanted to disarm with my bow? Is it even possible? Precise Shot, Point Blank Shot Per SRD: "As a melee attack, you may attempt to disarm your opponent." A bow is a ranged weapon so no, I would say not. |
| dorpond09-24-04, 09:22 AM | Now that I have some time, I can better ask my original question. Look at the following scenario: The fighter is readying his whip that if the enemy tries to use a potion, he will attemt a disarm. During the enemys round, he pulls out his potion and the fighter cracks his whip 10' away. Now, the disarm rule states that there are opposed attack rolls. The only penalties they talk about -4 for being a light weapon and a -4 if it is not a melee weapon. A potion bottle isn't any of the above. Now let's look at the following rule: "Improvised Weapons: Sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat. Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses one in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object. To determine the size category and appropriate damage for an improvised weapon, compare its relative size and damage potential to the weapon list to find a reasonable match. I would say that a potion is an improvised weapon, wouldn't you? So what end result do you think we would get in the following situation? |

A potion bottle isn't any of the above.A potion bottle (or wand) is "-4 if it is not a melee weapon". You could potentially apply the -4 for an "improvised weapon" too, but I wouldn't, on the basis that you are not using it as a weapon at all. |
| The Legendary Two Sandals09-24-04, 12:24 PM | since potion bottles are suppose to be vials that means there diminutive or tiny or which ever. more importantly they are significantly smaller than alchemists fire and thus you sunder the alchemists fire. |
| dirkformica09-24-04, 04:47 PM | What if I wanted to disarm with my bow? Is it even possible? Precise Shot, Point Blank Shot Yes, if you take the feat Ranged Disarm, from "Complete Warrior," on page 103, you can make a Ranged Disarm attack. You can also take the Prestige Class Exotic Weapon Master from "Complete Warrior," page 30. You can take a weapon Stunt which allows you to perform a Ranged Disarm. |
