| rikimaru7501-12-06, 08:32 AM | I understand the normal disarm rules and everything; however, I was wondering what would be a good ruling on actually disarm someone in combat. (cut off someone's hand or maiming limbs.) For example, say an NPC is very skilled with a sword and in a climactic duel between a PC and the NPC, he lops off the PCs hand, similar to the Darth Vader vs. Luke Skywalker duel in Empire Strikes Back (Episode V). Any ideas on rules for that and feats requires if any? |
| Subedei01-12-06, 08:52 AM | If you want something like that to happen just make it happen, you don't need rules for every little thing as long as it's realistically plausible enough not to bother the PCs. |
| Inigo Carmine01-12-06, 09:01 AM | That is an imfamous called shot, something that doesn't work very well in D&D (or any system where you gain more HP as you advance). D&D is built around the mechanic of HP being a measure of how hard you are to kill. Cutting off someone's hand is pretty much a fight-ender, and it bypasses the HP mechanic, which in turn pretty much defeats a large portion of the mechanics that the game is based on. Bad idea. |
| jaelis01-12-06, 09:42 AM | Actually, it's not so bad as long as you don't let anything like that happen until the victim is down below 0 hp. If cutting of their arm instead of knocking them unconcious makes more sense for the story, then go for it. Mechanically, the results are the same: the victim is effectively immobilized and unable to act. |
