| Exiled05-10-06, 07:50 PM | The party recently kiled a displacer beast so I skinned it and used some oil of timelessness on the hide. I want to eventually make a Cloak of displacement and was wondering if there were any rules or house rules that would cheapen the items material component cost? or something... |

Your DM could count the hide as the treasure reward you earned for killing it in the first place, but you do not get any item of wealth for free from killing creatures. Anything of worth is a reflection of the GP gain you make along with your EXP. If the Displacer Hide is worth something, then there should be an equivalent amount of treasure "missing" from other rewards later. As such, if your DM "owed" you 500gp, he could have the hide be a 1000gp discount for the next Cloak of Displacement you make/commission. (The doubling is a reflection of preselecting your treasure, since you would be able to sell it for 500gp to someone else). |

So say the hide's worth 2000 gp, it can count as 2000gp of the materials cost. So instead of buying 12000gp of materials for the major cloak of displacement, you'd only have to buy 10,000 and use the hide in crafting it as well. Flavorful, and completely within the rules if your DM allows you to do it |

When doing this, the material component obtained should never exceed 1/3 the gold cost (when you craft something you triple it's value and so no unworked portion of the material components should exceed 1/3 the value). For the 12,000 cloak, that means it should be less than 3,000. 2,000 gp sounds pretty good to me. I would only allow 3,000 if the creature was an advanced version and you did a particularly good job of skinning it. Also note, as a DM, I would rule that if you were attempting to make a Major Cloak of Displacement instead of a minor one, it would still reduce the price by no more than 3,000 gp. |
