| Mogofeiden06-03-06, 12:41 PM | Hi everyone, I'm interested in knowing if one can qualify for a diving attack by jumping and falling the required distance. from Races of the Wild A dive attack works like a charge, minimum movement 30ft forward and 10ft downward. Must use a piercing weapon. a long jump's vertical height is 0.25 of the distance thus, would a DC40 (on flat ground) long jump qualify? The jump dc's are not at stake, I'm just interested in the principle that the diving attack can be achieved through jumping. (I know that using fly is easier to achieve) What do you think? Regards, Mogofeiden |

So unless your character has the ability to fly, if even temporarily, the only option would be to jump down from a high ledge or something. You'd better hope your attack hits and does a lot of damage, though...enough to be worth the falling damage. If your character can't fly, the best thing I can reccomend is taking a look at the Raptor School tactical feat in Complete Warrior. |
| utilitarian06-03-06, 02:23 PM | While I don't think this would apply, there is a powerful feat in the Complete Adventurer called Leap Attack which lets you do stupid high damage with power attack in combination with a leaping attack, and as a bonus it works with any kind of weapon. |
| Mogofeiden06-03-06, 03:12 PM | Well, this trick is just a bonus tactic for the character I'm putting together (which by the way, uses light weapons, so no power attack). Yes, the jumper better have a good way to avoid falling damage, the DC40 long jump only has a max height of 10ft though. But, how cool would it be if it's viable? And besides it just seems logical that the diving attack shouldn't just be exclusive to flyers since the only difference between a flyer and a jumper (in this situation) is how they get out of the dive, not the ability to meet the prerequisites for it. |
| MADGator06-03-06, 03:28 PM | I disagree. A flyer can easily swoop over the target they are diving on. A jumper has to worry about landing on their target and falling prone, being tripped up, and that's if they are even able to clear the target. Flyers also have the advantage of not having to contort their body in odd ways to make the attack. |

Like I said the main difference is how to get out of the dive (it's a weighted risk the jumper takes). Considering the jumper is able to qualify for for the prerequisites of the diving attack, shouldn't he have the option to dive attack? This is not about custom classes, but rather if the diving attack can be an option for a jumper. |
