Hi all,

I'd like some help in confirming whether I'm interpreting the rules right (specifically if I can do a Diving Spirited Charge) and in calculating the damage for this tactic.

Basicly I'm trying to use enlarge person and fly on the mage and his Horse Companion (through the Share Spells ability) and then do a Diving Spirited Charge.

Build
Human Druid(1)/Wizard(5)/Fighter(1); 7HD; CR7;
Spells
Enlarge Person
Fly
Weapon: Lance
Feats: Mounted Combat; Ride By Attack; Spirited Charge; Power Attack;
Str:16; Int:16;
BAB: 3;

My calculations put the damage output at
1d8 -> Enlarge Person: 2d6 Lance ->
Spirited Charge: 6d6 ->
Diving Charge: 8d6 + 16 (One-Handed Str x4) + 12 (One-Handed Pw Attack x4)

Final: 8d6+28

Additionaly, would the bonus to hit be +2 (Charge) +1 (Mounted) +1 (Higher Ground) -1 (Size). Total +3 to hit, -2 to AC?

What's going on with Diving Charge? Is that a feat somewhere? I don't recall any ruling that says you deal extra damage when diving, but I could be wrong.

From the SRD
A creature that flies can make dive attacks. A dive attack works just like a charge, but the diving creature must move a minimum of 30 feet and descend at least 10 feet. It can make only claw(Slashing) or talon(Piercing) attacks, but these deal double damage. A creature can use the run action while flying, provided it flies in a straight line.

Races of the wild also has this info

Oh, that is too good.

Well, a 16 str gives you a +3 modifier, so that's 8d6+12+12 for 8d6+24. However, I'd advise getting shock trooper (Compete Warrior) and using two hands (the lance is a one-handed weapon, and thus can be used with two hands). This will give you 8d6+16 ((1+1/2 str)x4)+ 24 ((3x2)x4) for a grand total of 8d6+40 (average 68 damage, minimum 48).

I checked, you can not get both the Mounted and the Higher Ground bonus to hit. They are the same thing.

The "Mounted" bonus reads as follows:

When you attack a creature smaller than your mount that is on foot, you get the +1 bonus on melee attacks for being on higher ground.

In other words, there is no "mounted" bonus, it is just a statement that you get a Higher Ground bonus some of the time you are mounted.

Thanks tarkin for pointing the higher ground bonus.
theotherdraxen, I forgot to point out that enlarge person gives a +2 size bonus to strength so it's str18(+4).

So the final damage is
One handed: 8d6+28 and a possible fortitude save for massive damage
Two handed: 8d6+48 and a fortitude save for massive damage

Sweet...:P

This is proper BBEG material,

"You see a large humanoid mounted on a elefant-sized horse, they're hovering above the ground and then... The knight aims his 20ft long lance in your direction and charges..."

What about critical damage?
One handed: 12d6+32 and a possible fortitude save for massive damage
Two handed: 12d6+57 and a fortitude save for massive damage

... I think... Aah, my brain hurts...

Normally, you do x4 damage. On a crit, it's x6 damage.
One-handed: (2d6+4 str+ 3 Pt)x4=8d6+28
Two-handed: (2d6+6 str +6 pt)x4=8d6+48

One-handed crit: (2d6+4 str+3 pt)x6=12d6+42
Two-handed crit: (2d6+6 str+6 pt)x6=12d6+72

I'm running a character maximizing his spirited charge. I play a cleric with the Strength and Destruction domains (look up their granted powers) and using power attack. I calculated that at level 20 I'll be able to do over 300 damage on average without a crit. Once per day.

If you're riding a flying mount, you're not the one with the "Fly" movement mode, so that diving charge maneuver won't give you an additional x2 multiplier. Here's the rule, with some context:

SRD
===
Movement Modes: Creatures may have modes of movement other than walking and running. These are natural, not magical, unless specifically noted in a monster description.
[...]
Fly: A creature with a fly speed can move through the air at the indicated speed if carrying no more than a light load.
[...]
A creature that flies can make dive attacks. A dive attack works just like a charge, but the diving creature must move a minimum of 30 feet and descend at least 10 feet. It can make only claw or talon attacks, but these deal double damage. A creature can use the run action while flying, provided it flies in a straight line.
===

You ain't a "creature that flies."

Just get Shock Trooper and Spirited Charge. You'll do enough damage to make your DM cry.

If the diving rules mentioned anything about mounted flyers regarding this I wouldn't have posted.

Mind you, the mount in this build can be flying through the use of its share spells ability, meaning that the rider would also be a flyer. Also, the whole thing about mounted combat is that one uses the mounts movement abilities with one's attack. So, although RAW doesn't specifically rule it in, it doesn't rule it out either.

In our campaign, a fly character riding a flying mount can make a dive attack mounted by:
1 - having the mount of the character delay their initiative to each other. (druid's animal companion has a separate initiative for us, dunno the rule on this)
2 - make the ride check to have the mount dive.
3 - make the attack roll to hit.

Keep in mind, the mount cannot make an attack this round.
