As most of you know, DMG II included limited-use energy special abilities for weapons. Each of these have the possibility of dealing extra energy damage on a successful hit, but only a limited number of times per day. Some of these are based on your CON modifier, but most are tied to your CHA modifier. I fail to see why CON was sometimes used, and why CHA was sometimes used ... the reasoning behind it. Additionally, it seems like there should be a consistency between the abilities, where all were tied to a single ability modifier.

Any thoughts and insights?

Well, the Holy and Unholy go off charisma, which makes sense because paladins and blackguards, the types of paragons that would be wielding those most commonly, also have charisma based abilities. Plus it makes Charisma less of a dump stat.

For the others, it seems pretty random. Fire and Acid go off Con, but Lightning and Ice go off Cha, so, yea. . .

Agreed about Holy and Unholy ...

And I think it makes sense for Fire and Acid to go off CON ... the whole Fortitude relationship there. But, in that case, it would make sense for Lightning and Ice to go off of CON as well.

On the other hand, CHA is the ability for Use Magic Device ... so that makes sense for Lightning and Ice going off of CHA. But, in that case, it would make sense for Fire and Acid to do the same.
