If a craeature has the following dmg reduction:
1.)5/evil/good....
2.)7/silver
3.)10/-
4.) or any other :)

would a +1(or higher) mag. weapon bypass it?

1) only if your weapon has the good subtype. i think. i may be wrong on that one
2) Only if your weapon is silver.
3) the little - means that nothing can bypass it as far as i can remember.
4) it depends on the DR.
so for all you can by pass 1 and 2 if you have a silver, good/evil weapon. the +1 will help you with DR 10/magic

Nope, not unless you play 3.0, or use the DMG II.

The only type of DR a +1 weapon can overcome is DR X/magic, or DR X/whatever type of damage the weapon deals (slashing, etc.)

No.
(regular) magic weapons only penetrate X/Magic DR.

So even a +5 mag. weapon wouldn't bypass it?
I remember that in v3.0 a +1 m.w would work.

What all changes have been made in v3.5 considering DR?

basily IMHO they nurfed DR. i personaly liked the old way better. so much easier. basicly now you have to have a weapon of the certain type of DR.
example- if you have DR 15/magic, any magic weapon can by pass it but nothing else. if you have DR 15/silver, only a silver weapon can by pass it but not a +10 magic sword of death.

With the exception of epic weapons bypassing DR/magic, there is no hierarchy in 3.5 DR.

DR/magic - The weapon must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus.
DR/epic - The weapon must have at least a +6 enhancement bonus (not including special abilities).
DR/silver - The weapon must be made from alchemical silver or have a dose of silversheen applied to it.
DR/cold iron - The weapon must be made from cold-forged iron.
DR/adamantine - The weapon must be made from adamantine.
DR/alignment - The weapon must have the appropriate alignment, either through an enchantment like holy or the align weapon spell.
DR/damage type - The weapon must deal the appropriate type of damage; either bludgeoning, slashing, or piercing.
DR/— - No physical weapon will bypass it. Spells, powers, and spell-like abilities will, though.

That's it. A weapon that's just magic won't bypass silver. A silvered weapon isn't automatically magic.

If a creature has DR with two types, say 10/magic and good, then your weapon must bear both types (you can do this early on with the magic weapon and align weapon spells).

While being harder to bypass outright in 3.5, DR values are reduced, making them easier to get around. DR typically appears in multiples of 5, never going higher than 20 (except DR/— which appears in multiples of 1 and never goes above 5 or so).

No, a +5 weapon would not bypass DR 10/silver. But think about it from the other perspective: if DR was so absurdly easy to bypass, why should a PC bother with putting up Stoneskin, for example? Or protection from arrows (which I admit is gimped the moment a +1 crossbow enters the stage).

For a detailed explanaition of the DR rules in DnD v3.5, you could try to look here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#damageReduction).

Happy gaming! :)

Which is a good thing, because with your +4 keen speed vorpal unholy greatsword you'd deal crap damage against a Solar with his DR 50/+5.

In v3.0 DR was kinda "all or nothing". Either you were able to punch through it, then you could easily ignore it and kill the creature anyways. But if you could not bypass your target's DR, it was basically immune to your attacks (DR 30/+3, 40/+4, or 50/+5, anyone?).

but wouldn't vorpal go off regardless? sorry for asking but i haven't played 3.0 in forever and i never studied it. i thought it was if you got a crit it was an auto kill. Any way in 3.0 there wasn't alot with DR and i never ran into them, so maybe my DM was just being nice. *shrugs* i Personaly liked 3.0 cause that was the system that i got started in. granted 3.5 isn't that much diffrent. I just noticed how many more creatures have DR now then back in the day.

As I know, if all dmg is negated by DR, so are all side-efects (vorpal, wounding, or any other...)

As far as I can remember (and as WinDReiN has already said), any special effects were negated if you didn't inflict any damage. But I must admit that I'm too lazy to retrieve my v3.0 DMG and MM and look it up. :P

Also, the current system encourages a player to get more special abilities on his weapons, because a simple "+1" is enough to bypass "DR x/magic". This frees up resources to get abilities like holy, thundering, or bane(undead), and not just race to the next "+1" bonus.

And that is in my opinion a good idea. After all, a +1 keen bane(chaotic outsider) bane(evil outsider) holy axiomatic greatsword is much more interesting (and also more powerful) than a +5 keen holy lawful greatsword. Especially in the hands of the level 20 paladin smacking the Balor with 2d6(base)+1(magic)+4(bane)+2d6(holy)+2d6 (axiomatic)+4d6(bane)=10d6+5+(1.5*Str mod) points of damage with each strike! :ayyyy!:

The funny thing about that weapon is that it still doesn't ignore the 3.5 Balor's DR but the damage over DR should hurt just a bit.

I much prefer the new DR system since in makes DR mean something more than hit or miss. Not that your likely to fight a Planetar but 30/+3 is far more hit or miss than 10/evil but many more things can get over 10 damage and hurt the angel than will have a +3 weapon or do over 30 damage.

In 3.0 a Pit Fiends DR 25/+2 is almost alway ignored but DR 15/good and silver makes that defense worth something.
