Do any official "smokebomb" or "flashbomb" rules exist? [Archive] - Wizards Community

So, are there any official (or unofficial for that matter) D&D sources that published alchemical rules for smokebombs? Something other than a "smokestick" meant for use by a ninja character. An eggshell device would be ideal. Anything that could either create an obscuring smoke cloud or assist when using the "create a diversion to hide" iteration of Bluff...

On a separate note, what about flashbombs that blind? Do those exist in any official or unofficial capacity?

Yes. All of those are in Oriental Adventures. They're called Eggshell Grenades, and there are several varieties.

What's the problem with Smokesticks? If you don't like the igniting business, just encase one in Alchimist's Fire. When you throw it to the ground, the AF will combust and ignite the stick.

Smoke Effects
A character who breathes heavy smoke must make a Fortitude save each round (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or spend that round choking and coughing. A character who chokes for 2 consecutive rounds takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage.

Smoke obscures vision, giving concealment (20% miss chance) to characters within it.

That shouldn't be a danger. It's said that it creates a Fog Cloud effect, which leads me to believe it's water-based smoke rather than carbon-based. You don't have to worry about choking on that.

Thunderstones might work as a variant on the flash bangs.

Otherwise, yeah, smoke sticks

@Phaedrus
Who cares? Just hold your breath - that can be accomplished for 2*Con rounds without even making a check if you know about it beforehand.

Flash Pellets from Complete Adventurer are fun and useful as well as cheao - but unfortunately, their blinding range is only 5 ft. around the point of impact. Not very much like counterstrike one... :)

how does this works with the 3rd round of chocking? you take another 1d6 or only in the 4th round of chocking?

about that smokestick/alechmists fire cocktail:
it woudn't work. that's superheated flame (note dmg) vs. normal fire dmg.
true, the resulting flame upon impact would ignite the smokestick, however, given the intensity of the flames, they would most surely consume the smoke as it was created; oxygen vacume. air current is drawn to fire to fuel it. fire burns carbon out of air. if smoke agent is at the heart of the flame, its byproducts will be burned up before they can reach their zenith, or open air.
if not that, it would immolate the alchemical ingredients that make the smoke too fast. smokesticks are slower burning as per normal use.

As soon as you show me where the rules say one can use a fireball to clear a room of smoke, I'll give you that one. Otherwise, making somewhat less effective alchimist's fire shouldn't be a problem.

There's also the Noxious Smokesticks from the Eberron Campaign setting. They're essentially smokesticks but they also have a nauseating effect.

it's not printed. you will actually have to use some grey matter to reach a common sense conclusion in alot of gaming mechanical debates. any extra text, images, "filler" really, costs them money at the print shop. multiply that buy a few 100,000 times/PHB and it adds up. seriously, why bother?
you can't expect them to kowtow to every single "what if" or hypothetical. this is typically when formal education and speculation pays off.

i know you want to have a smooth, easy-to-believe RAW, but it's not happening. it normally never does for cases like these. alot of this game is subjective and requires general applications and examples from the real world. the alleged smoke/fire bomb in question would not work, but that's real world chemistry/physics, not you and your's fantasy design. some smoke would be given off as it's almost unavoidable, but not an appreciable amount.
oh, and Fireball wouldn't clear a room of smoke btw. it's a sudden blast, not a protracted bout of intense alchemical flame. probably make more smoke actually and the "flashover" it causes would burst most windows and some weak fortifications.
