Do AoO's stop movement if they hit? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey guys - you've all been so helpful with my other questions, so here's one more: the group I play with (and others they play with) interpret the SRD An attack of opportunity “interrupts” the normal flow of actions in the round. If an attack of opportunity is provoked, immediately resolve the attack of opportunity, then continue with the next character’s turn (or complete the current turn, if the attack of opportunity was provoked in the midst of a character’s turn).

so that if say, a fighter is charging at a bad guy, and gets hit sucessfully by an AoO on the way there, he will stop in the square he was moving to when he provoked that attack, no matter whether he was knocked down or not. If that square isn't where he wanted to end up, then he just didn't get there. The explicit examples I've read say that if that fighter is knocked down or killed they stop, but it doesn't say explicitly whether their motion continues or not. It also applies if you're trying to get away from someone, you step out of their threatened square, and they hit you - you stop in the square you were moving to, and get a standard action (which you can use to double move, if you want) So...is this right?

no, you continue there turn. So if a character is hit during a move action, after the AoO is resolved, he can finish the remainder of his move action.

If he is knocked prone or some such, then obviously he cannot move any further, since it requires a full move action to stand up or crawl.

ScipioX is right. Unless the action specifically says that it is stopped by a successful attack of opportunity, then it continues. An untrained grapple attempt, for example can be stopped by a successful attack of opportunity.

There's a feat for that.

STAND STILL [GENERAL]
Prerequisite: Str 13.
Benefit: When a foe’s movement out of a square you threaten grants you an attack of opportunity, you can give up that attack and instead attempt to stop your foe in his tracks. Make your attack of opportunity normally. If you hit your foe, he must succeed on a Reflex save against a DC of 10 + your damage roll (the opponent does not actually take damage), or immediately halt as if he had used up his move actions for the round.
Since you use the Stand Still feat in place of your attack of opportunity, you can do so only a number of times per round equal to the number of times per round you could make an attack of opportunity (normally just one).
Normal: Attacks of opportunity cannot halt your foes in their tracks.

It's in the Expanded Psionics Handbook (and the SRD under Psionic Feats). Note that it is not specifically a psionic feat.

Thanks again guys, I appreciate it. I actually knew about the stand still feat, but people had told me that it only stopped them in the square they were leaving, whereas normally they were stopped in the square they were moving to.

Either way:
