Do bolas tangle? [Archive] - Wizards Community

If I trip somebody with bolas, can they stand up from prone on their next action and be just fine? Or will they have to untangle the bolas first some how?

Also, just so I understand the weapon rules correctly, I throw the bolas as a ranged touch attack and then make an opposed strength check to trip the target if it hits, right?

Bolas: You can use this weapon to make a ranged trip attack against an opponent. You can’t be tripped during your own trip attempt when using a set of bolas.

The text doesn't say to make a ranged attack, it specifically says to make a ranged trip attack. Trip attacks always start off with touch attacks. Am I right in this?

Are there any rules for me throwing the bolas at somebody's neck and strangling them with them? (I know that there are no called shots for this kind fo thing.)

Please help.

Let me clarify my original post: I am going to game with a bola wielding character tonight for the first time and I need to know how it works.

Otherwise it will all suck and I will blame all of you non-responders for it. :P

It appears to me that you make a ranged touch attack (1d20 + BAB + Dex vs. opponent's touch AC) then, if that succeeds, you make an opposed Str check. If that also succeeds, your opponent is prone, but unentangled.

Hurling the bolas would provoke an AoO, as usual for throwing things in combat. Since the range increment is 10 ft., your maximum range is five times that or 50 ft. (A Guided Shot spell seems ideal for these things.)

With Quickdraw, you could do this multiple times per round, with iterative attacks from high BAB and even two-weapon fighting.

The rules don't specify, but since you get half your Str bonus on damage from an off-hand attack, I'd give you half your Str bonus on your opposed Str check if you throw a bola with an off-hand attack. But that's just me.

No, there's nothing allowing you an opposed grapple or anything like it with bolas.

Thanks for the help KJ.

One of our players was imitating a bolas victim standing up from prone and then hopping around the battlefield because his legs were still tied together. It was really quite humerous.

So you don't think a bolas victim would have to expend a move action to untie the bolas from around his legs before being able to spend another move action to stand up? Or maybe they can get up, but suffer from speed reduction so long as their limbs are tied?

What do the rest of you forumites think? Is this official? If not, would it make a good house rule for the under-rated bolas?

Nope, bolas just trip, and don't entangle. Maybe getting it off is part of the move action to stand up. Maybe they aren't meant to completely wrap up the guy's legs. Regardless, it's just a simple trip.

I don't mean entangle as per the rules term Entangle. That is the net's trick.

What I mean to say is, would somebody have to expend an action to remove the bolas before being able to stand up. (ie - one move action to remove, a second to stand up)

And what I mean to say is, no.

If you as a DM want to add that, go ahead. It's not RAW.
