| Fillow04-24-07, 03:35 PM | Well met A friend of mine is looking for data about a possible famous monk in Toril to achieve his knowledge about this class. He would like if it exist any novel or any book about him. I told him about Danica, Cadderly's wife. She's the only one I know. Could you help him ? Thanks a lot. |
| Boda04-24-07, 03:54 PM | uber-mighty Grandmaster Kane! Seek in Damara(bloodstone lands) for King dragonsbane buddies and you will find invincible Kane! |
| Khaelieth04-24-07, 06:49 PM | I always prefered the pot-bellied, beer-brewing, red-nosed monk tbh. Friar Tuck ftw. |
| Joggernutt04-24-07, 07:40 PM | Hey I know this is a bit off the subject but is there any novels with Kane and his group in them? thx in advance and I mean novels besides the sellsword saga |
| Grandmaster_Kane04-24-07, 09:13 PM | As of yet no but there are murmers that someone will soon take up the adventures of king gareth and the lich zhengi |
| The Ubbergeek04-24-07, 09:48 PM | I always prefered the pot-bellied, beer-brewing, red-nosed monk tbh. Friar Tuck ftw. You meaned, priest. :P |
| Lord Karsus04-25-07, 01:12 AM | You meaned, priest. :P -In the case of Friar Tuck, he was a priest and a monk. Some Christian Priests qualify to be Monks, and vice versa (I think). So, everyone wins! :) -As for powerful monks, the majority of them are going to be from Kara-Tur. |
| Steel General04-25-07, 10:46 AM | Don't forget Danica, Cadderly's friend. Not sure of her levels, but I think they'd be decent. EDIT: Not sure how famous she is though... |
| Lord Karsus04-25-07, 10:57 AM | Don't forget Danica, Cadderly's friend. Not sure of her levels, but I think they'd be decent. -That was the one character the OP said he/she wasn't looking for! :P |
| createvmind04-25-07, 12:25 PM | Grandmaster Kane is in Road of the Patriarch novel. |
| Grandmaster_Kane04-25-07, 02:54 PM | he said he already knew the sellswords series create |
| createvmind04-25-07, 03:44 PM | Ummmmm ok. |
| Krash04-25-07, 08:18 PM | Dumal Erard of the Company of Crazed Venturers mentione din the "City of Splendors: Waterdeep" product. -- George Krashos |
| Lord Karsus04-25-07, 08:31 PM | he said he already knew the sellswords series create Ummmmm ok. -The OP didn't mention that. Another poster mentioned it. |
| Purple Dragon Knight04-25-07, 08:41 PM | Yes, Grandmaster Kane is in the third instalment of the Sellswords series... ...and so far (1/2-way through it), what an impressive monk! Spoilers: Two powerful dragons actually shudder when he shows up for an impromptu visit (read: interrogation session). Meanwhile, Jarlaxle actually has to sleep with one of the lady dragons on a regular basis to keep himself alive and 'useful' in that one dragon's eyes... You can read between the lines: if the mighty mercenary leader is so afraid of the wyrms, while they in turn shudder at the approach of Grandmaster Kane... |
| kaor04-25-07, 09:32 PM | I'll bet he is still a 1st edition monk then. |
| Mad Mage04-25-07, 11:15 PM | Was Saint Sollars the Twice Martyred a monk at all? I can't quite remember what he was. Then again, is there any information on him to make him a valid addition to this thread? |
| bondious04-26-07, 01:55 PM | I think he might be dead, I'm actually pretty sure he is, but the 'Cleric Quintet' books mentions Danica's sensei, Grandmaster Penpagh D’Ahn. Don't know how useful that is, but there you go. ALSO, now that I'm thinking about it, there is a character in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting named Sahbuti Shanardanda. He's a monk 6/sorcerer 4/shadow dancer 3, and is from Amn (or at least in that section of the book). Not sure how "famous" he is, and the fact that he has more non-monk levels than monk ones might preclude him being a "famous monk". It's something, though. :duel: |
| createvmind04-26-07, 03:34 PM | I didn't feel like typing that at the time Karsus, was wondering what possessed him/her to point out what I said. Thanks for clearing that up as I was having one of those days :( . I believe the villianess in the Black Bouiquet or something like that, she's a monk of Shar/other class I think. |
| Fillow04-26-07, 04:01 PM | Thanks a lot for all these data. I did not think to get so many information. May I ask something more ? That was the one character the OP said he/she wasn't looking for What is OP ? I understood I was the OP but what is it ? An the last one : Why can I not use the Quick reply box ? Thx (= thanks ?) again ! N.B. : I'm a French FR player ! |
| bondious04-26-07, 04:21 PM | "OP" = "Original Poster", which in this case (as you correctly assumed) is you. As for the "Quick Reply", I've never used it so I don't know. :D |
| Zanan04-26-07, 04:33 PM | Famous "monks" ... i.e. those who might be known to more than just the local village skald ... would probably include those of the Yellow Rose Monastry (Damara) as well as those sages who keep Candlekeep running. Not sure whether the latter are monks though ... but that class would fit well, experts aside. |
| bondious04-26-07, 04:46 PM | Famous "monks" ... i.e. those who might be known to more than just the local village skald ... would probably include those of the Yellow Rose Monastry (Damara) as well as those sages who keep Candlekeep running. Not sure whether the latter are monks though ... but that class would fit well, experts aside. I thought the sages of Candlekeep were clerics of deities like Oghma or Deneir, and Loremasters (possibly also to the above mentioned deities). I don't know that much about it, though. |
| Khaelieth04-26-07, 05:17 PM | Zanan, what about the Ebon Fist drow fellows? Their master might be quite good |
| Zanan04-26-07, 05:29 PM | Zanan, what about the Ebon Fist drow fellows? Their master might be quite good You refer to the Blackened Fist of Undrek-thoz? I doubt that there has been any great tradition of drow monks (or other easterlings), nor that much fame and knowledge about them. But somesuch can change in the next novel or sourcebook. |
| createvmind04-26-07, 07:18 PM | Candlekeep has a whole contingent of monks and from what I've read in novels they are rightly feared for various reasons. |
| Chosen of Bane04-26-07, 07:22 PM | To reinforce what many others have said, Grand Master Kane is probably the best choice as he is an epic monk of ridiculous power and very famous in his region (Bloodstone Lands). To change gears a bit, the Zhentarim have started an order of monks known as the Order of the Iron Gauntlet and the person in charge of that order is Mara Kalaliv. So I suppose she would qualify for a famous evil monk. |

I doubt that there has been any great tradition of drow monks (or other easterlings), nor that much fame and knowledge about them. But somesuch can change in the next novel or sourcebook. Yep, that was them. They feature briefly in Realms of the Elves. |
| Longstrider2304-26-07, 08:50 PM | I can't remember much about him, but look up Cantoule, master of the Yellow Rose Monastery after Grandmaster Kane left. The only place that I've found him is in the "Year of Rogue Dragons" series, by Richard Lee Byers. |
| Burningspear04-26-07, 09:51 PM | I am just wondering out loud, what constitutes a "proper monk"?, is it like any Jet Li movie type? or can it even be a "Turk strongman type" monk? with a fighting style more like roman wrestling and maybe a mix of Steven Segall?sp? :tie: :plotting: |

| Braekor Dragonfang05-01-07, 06:52 PM | you could always make up your own famous monk, for example (last name first as is normal in japanese culture) Akamane Shintousen Male Mountain Spirit Folk Monk 30 / Henshin Mystic 10 / Shintao Monk 10 Age 736 Ht 5'8" Wt 150 Eyes brown Hair white Skin tan The child of a great mountain spirit, Akamane Tousen's battle prowess and wisdom are the subject of legends in Kara-Tur. However, reaching the end of his life, he moved to the Unapproachable East forty years ago. Although he takes up permanent residence in Velprintalar, capital of Aglarond, Shintousen-sama uses powerful Sandals of Teleport Without Error to walk across faerun, going to new places and meeting new people, looking for someone with a suitable will and body to take on as a student. He has been sighted in major cities across faerun such as Waterdeep, Silverymoon, Baldur's Gate, Heliogabalus, Halagard, Suzail and Hlondeth |
| Lord Karsus05-01-07, 06:56 PM | you could always make up your own famous monk, for example (last name first as is normal in japanese culture) -Japan is not Kara-Tur, however. |
| Braekor Dragonfang05-02-07, 01:07 PM | -Japan is not Kara-Tur, however. granted, but then many asian cultures place more emphasis on the family than the individual IIRC |
| Lord Karsus05-03-07, 09:02 AM | granted, but then many asian cultures place more emphasis on the family than the individual IIRC -I was really just talking about the name structure. |
| Braekor Dragonfang05-03-07, 09:04 AM | -I was really just talking about the name structure. well I pretty much did it because to me it looks better that way |
| Lord Karsus05-03-07, 09:07 AM | well I pretty much did it because to me it looks better that way :shifty: -To me, it looks all the same... :shifty: |
| Braekor Dragonfang05-03-07, 02:54 PM | :shifty: -To me, it looks all the same... :shifty: yes, but i am not you however... at least not in this universe :D |
| Lord Karsus05-03-07, 05:29 PM | yes, but i am not you however... at least not in this universe :D -Now, how can I really believe that you are not me? All I know for certain is that I exist. I don't know for certain that my mother exists, that my father exists, that my dog exists, and, especially, that you exist. Therefore, you may or may not be part of my own subconscious, even though you might deny it. It's a crazy, crazy world... |

| Lord Karsus05-05-07, 06:32 PM | Koo-Koo!!! DON'THURTME! :hides: -Hey, it's 100% valid. Disprove what I said...Go ahead...:P |
| KnightErrantJR05-05-07, 06:59 PM | The Jordain from the Councilors and Kings trilogy were very much a monk-type order. |
