I was wondering if anyone had a recollection of an FR book mentioning the race Catfolk, statted in Races of the Wild (or wherever it was in older editions)?

If there is no information, where would a Catfolk come from? The description in Races of the Wild seems to point to the plains of the Shining South, where they might live along with Loxo and Wemics, or perhaps farther south in Chult?

no, but there are catpeople, they have been called Tabaxi, the same as the human tribes of Chult. I'd say that they come from Maztica, or south of Maztica, now called Katashka. You can find them Chult, Shaar, Nathlekh the City of Cats (in Shining Plains), Mistledale ...

I would allow catfolk to hail from Nathlakh, City of Cats. [Look west of the Gulthmere Forest, south of the Dragon Coast.] Further details in Powers & Pantheons [2e] in the write-up of Nobanion.

There's a short story in Realms of Valor -- "A Virtue by Reflection" -- set in Arabel that involves a band of catfolk temporarily seizing control of the city.

The catfolk kind are also big in Maztica... where they also bear some relation to the evil, intelligent, and magical jaguar lords [which are basically dire jaguars with brains and magic.]

There were cat-like-folk [werelions actually] in issues 19-22 of the Forgotten Realms comic. They actually called themselves the akri and the party featured in the comics referred to them as "cat people", but they were all shapeshifters who seemed to have a natural inclination for hunting humans. I can't recall whether it was exclusively stated whether they were lycanthropes or not, but they certainly seemed to act in such a fashion and exhibited the shapeshifting powers common to were-creatures -- three forms IIRC. Most were leonine, though a few were closer in appearance to other much large hunting cats like pumas and leopards.

There are some in Kara-Tur (Hengyokai) and they have southern cousins (Katanaga) - both groups include beings representing different types of anthropomorphic animals, not just cats.

There were also the various sub-races of the Rakasta, but those are only native to Mystara, AFAIK, so you would have to do some plane-hopping.

IIRC, there are some Panther-people down in the Sempadan Jungles of Zakhara, as well.

I think the Cat Lords from Dragon magazine are native to Faerūn - I could have sworn I read a story with one. Probably your best bet would be the Tabaxi from Chult, like Jiggawha mentioned - they are the closest geographically to the Heartlands.

Thanks for that info on the Akri Sage - I may just use that as part of the Pantherins I'm doing for the Malatra region. ;)
