Just a general, and fairly brain-dead easy, rules question that has been the subject of some discussion in my play group.

When does the bonuses (bonii?) from Bardic Music, specifically, their Inspire Courage ability, take effect? I've always thought that as a Standard Action, the effect comes into play immediately, in the same manner that a spell, like Haste or Bless, would. Others in the group, however, insist that the bonsusii would kick in on the Bard's initiative on the following round.

Which is the correct "by the book" rules accurate interpretation?

Thank ye muchly.

If your bard says, "I begin inspiring courage in my allies" every ally that acts after him in order of initiative should gain the benefits of that use of bardic music.

That's what I thought. I don't know where the idea that it takes effect the following round came from, but it just seemed utterly wrong to me.

In 3.0, the PHB stated that "allies have to hear the bard sing for a full round for these bonuses to take effect". Since I'm running a 3.0 campaign, this is what I'm used to. Dunno if they changed it in 3.5, but closely reading the bardic music entry under the Bard's class description should silence (15' radius) your doubters.

That's right: that specific 3.0 stipulation is no longer in effect. In the current 3.5 ruleset, bard sings as a standard action, and boom: everyone has the bonus.

Ah, so it's a holdover from 3.0. Alright then. We house-rule a lot of stuff, but I'll be pressing the issue at the table Saturday so my allies stop getting screwed out of a round of bonuses. Thanks for clarifying the official rule.
