| Slad Chaos07-02-07, 05:49 PM | Hello, is it possible for an arcane spellcaster to become a drider with arachnomancer PrC from Drow of the Underdark ? Can the arcane spellcaster prepare a domain spell from domain spider to become a permanent drider ? Which spell from the FRCS ? Thanks for your future answer. |
| Zémobiel07-02-07, 06:43 PM | The only he would had to bacame a ddrider is too loose at a test od Lolth... And by the way no drow would became a drider intentionally, that would effectively cast him out of drw society |
| Lord Karsus07-03-07, 12:41 AM | Hello, is it possible for an arcane spellcaster to become a drider with arachnomancer PrC from Drow of the Underdark ? -I don't have the book, but as long as the Drow-who-is-now-a-Drider still meets the prerequisites for being an Arachnomancer, there shouldn't be any problem. Can the arcane spellcaster prepare a domain spell from domain spider to become a permanent drider ? Which spell from the FRCS ? -Turning Drow into Driders is something that only Lolth does. There is no spell or anything that has actually been written that does this. |
| Borris07-03-07, 02:48 AM | -Turning Drow into Driders is something that only Lolth does. There is no spell or anything that has actually been written that does this. Check again. There's a spell that does exactly that in the Spell Compendium. Spider curse, a spell only available through the Spider domain (which Lolth should grant access to), can transform any small or medium humanoid into a drider creature under your mental control, with a duration of 1 day/level. It can be dispelled and it's not permanent like the transformation caused by Lolth, but the spell can be cast again before the duration expires. |
| Lord Karsus07-03-07, 09:55 AM | There's a spell that does exactly that in the Spell Compendium. -Never ever heard of it. Let me guess- a big ol' book filled with spells? It can be dispelled and it's not permanent like the transformation caused by Lolth, but the spell can be cast again before the duration expires. -Notice, it's not the same thing, then. Driders are never under the control of the priestess' who create them. And, notice how you typed "Drider creature". I don't know if that's what the spell says, word for word, but "Drider creatures" aren't necessarily Driders. |
| peteyrock07-03-07, 10:28 AM | The mechanics of this spell sound kind of whacky. What happens if you cast this on a lycanthrope? Do you get a were-drider-wolf-thing? |
| Slad Chaos07-03-07, 10:52 AM | There are in FRCS the following spells from domain spider : spider curse (6th) and spiderform (5th). I think that it permits to become a drider identical in MM. is it possible to apply a permanency ? |
| Lord Karsus07-03-07, 10:58 AM | is it possible to apply a permanency ? -Spells that can be made permanent by that spell would say so in their description. Check it out. |
| Borris07-06-07, 02:27 AM | -Never ever heard of it. Let me guess- a big ol' book filled with spells? I'm not sure whether you're being sarcastic here, but in case you're not, that's exactly what the book is. Spell Compendium is a whole book filled with nothing but spells. About half of them are new, while the rest is a best of taken from sources like Miniatures Handbook, Complete Arcane, Complete Divine, or Magic of Faerūn, errata'd or updated to 3.5 if needed. Spider curse is originally from the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. -Notice, it's not the same thing, then. Driders are never under the control of the priestess' who create them. And, notice how you typed "Drider creature". I don't know if that's what the spell says, word for word, but "Drider creatures" aren't necessarily Driders. I typed "Drider Creature" because the spell can be cast on any humanoid, not just a drow. If cast on a drow, however, you will get a creature that's almost exactly like a real drider (since it will keep its darkvision and spell resistance). The main difference is that it'll be controlled mentally by the cleric who cast the spell. By that's because it's a short-term curse brought by the spell of a cleric of Lolth, not Lolth herself. |
| Zanan07-06-07, 09:15 AM | Going by flair and material written in the old FR books, the driders are creatures only created by Lolth and under the observation / instigation of her chosen creatures, the yochlol. You may turn creatures into drider look-alikes via said spells or polymorph, but that would only be for a time. Of course, if Lolth find out about that hoax-drider, she me not be pleased. |

Of course, if Lolth find out about that hoax-drider, she me not be pleased. But since the spider curse spell can only be cast through the Spider domain, and is thus most likely granted by Lolth herself, I doubt the Spider Queen would get mad at one of her clerics using a temporary version of her iconic curse as long as it furthers the goals of her dogma. If it were a drow wizard using polymorph any object to turn a creature permanentlyinto a drider, though, I doubt she'd be so forgiving. |
| Zireael07-07-07, 05:04 AM | Driders are only created by Lloth and anything else is only similar to it. |
| captaincarot07-07-07, 08:40 AM | -No, I wasn't being sarcastic. I dont keep up with "Core" D&D materials, and didn't know such a book existed. i was having a peruse of it last monday in my local book shop, it looks rather nice. it's the next book on my list of to gets. and will stop me having to stump up the silly prices that MOF seems to be going for over here in england at the moment. 32 quid for MOF that's around 60 dollars an i ain't paying it. now does anyone have both and can they tell me are the spells in MOF in the spell compendium. |
| mcJoker07-07-07, 09:07 AM | Hello, is it possible for an arcane spellcaster to become a drider with arachnomancer PrC from Drow of the Underdark ? Can the arcane spellcaster prepare a domain spell from domain spider to become a permanent drider ? Which spell from the FRCS ? Thanks for your future answer. Let's take this from the top here...the only spell that an arachnomancer would have from the drow or spider domains is spider form. To my knowledge he doesn't even have the full ability, but can only transform himself into a monstrous spider (Underdark, pg. 30) Now if he can use the full ability, he would be able to begin casting it on himself at second level since a drider is a large aberration...however it lasts only 1 hour/level. Perhaps in combination with a wish spell... Preparing a domain spell would of course involve having points invested in the skill 'use magic item' and making the rolls for deciphering the written spell (similar to the spellcraft, yet this goes beyond recognizing what it is), emulating a class feature (since these scrolls would be limited to clerics) and emulating an ability (or have the required Wisdom level for the spell). Last but not least...where as temporarily polymorphing or turning one's self into a drider in order to survive certain situations would not be questionable, remaining one permanantly would ensure that one is outcast from drow society. As already mentioned, a drider is a creation of Lolth who has failed the special test she has given him...those who fail the Spider Queen are not welcome among the drow (besides the ones who do not venerate her of course). Also do not forget that drow and driders passionately hate each other. Does this keep the drider from venerating Lolth? No, so yes...in the long run it could be that a drider takes up the arachnomancer PrC...however he would not be able to associate with other followers of the Spider Queen and would (considering the fact he is doing this because he venerates Lolth and spiders) not associate with those who fight against Lolth...perhaps a good NPC however I would not use or allow it as a player's character. Is merely my 2¢ on the subject. |
| Borris07-08-07, 03:29 AM | now does anyone have both and can they tell me are the spells in MOF in the spell compendium. I checked all the spells for A to D in Magic of Faerūn (I'm not dedicated to check them all) and, out of the 59 spells listed there, only 7 do not appear in the Spell Compendium, and two of those are already in the 3.5 Player's Handbook, so you're only losing 5 spells. With an update ratio of more than 90%, it's not worth it to buy Magic of Faerūn just for the spells. |
| captaincarot07-08-07, 03:37 AM | thanks for that info borris :) |
| Aloki07-08-07, 11:04 AM | I would buy it though, from someone else besides the store you are getting it from, because it sounds like they are marking up the price. it should be half that, because the cover price for MoF is about $30, give a little more for tax (if you have tax on books over there(we have taxes on everything besides food)) because it has a boatload of flavor in it! From what i read, it tells you all about the weave, and how things interact with it! And to be honest, they need to come out with a Magic Compendium that has spells, and magic items, sure it would be a 600 page book, but hey! less chance to lose it! |
| captaincarot07-08-07, 12:51 PM | the reason they are marking things up at the moment is both MOF and the silver marches seem to be about as common as hens teeth, and twice as hard to get hold of. |
| JaiaDrottsingr07-08-07, 01:36 PM | I always had driders as non sentient, twisted, perverted beings, and the true resembling form of Lloth. Barbarians if anything at all. I don't think they'd be intelligent enough to commit to a lifestyle, let alone a society, class or an eddication. |

Actually, Driders can be quite intelligent...it really depends on the INT before becoming a Drider. The Drider's favored class seems to be Sorcerer, yet is not limited afaik. |
| Suin Bahhar07-08-07, 04:42 PM | Being cursed and touched by the fickle and divine goddess of spiders tends to twist the mind a bit. Ok, drow society is no cakewalk either but being in a halfvermin state feels like a worse curse to me. Enough to drive ones intellect to alien and barbaric thoughts. |
| mcJoker07-08-07, 05:21 PM | Which is a good point, though it doesn't necessarily affect the intelligence as it does the reasoning (let's add insanities!). The twisting can even go as far as to the Drider seeing his fate as a blessing of sorts...not to be blasphemous of Lolth...yet this is one of her shapes. |
| Lord Karsus07-09-07, 11:02 AM | -Driders do eat the flesh of other Drow. That does seem a bit barbaric and crazy. But, no, they are not mindless or anything. They're just a bit cooky in the head. |
